  1. Im ready for some good news in 2014. maybe the Belo deal will overcompensate for the slow death of the newspapers. Maybe the pretenders and frauds will continue to be forced out. Maybe Martore will become an engaged, humane leader. Maybe the layoffs will be over. Here's hoping wveryone has a better year ahead.

    1. Simply cross-subsidizing the publishing business would violate fiduciary responsibilities and shareholder interests. It'll have to stabilize or fail on its own merits.

    2. I'm one of the layoffs of Aug., 1, 2013. I have a better year ahead. I remember reading the "life after Gannett" posts while I was still working and thinking, can anybody really get back on their feet and do better in these times? I'm not quite there yet, but I will be within a year, and I'll be making more than my gannett job. And I'll be more relaxed, because my new company appreciates me, and reminds me weekly when I exceed what they expect. Who knew?

  2. 12:00 a.m., maybe in 2014, somebody else, with inside info on Gannett, will start a blog.

  4. So Gannett ill logic strikes again in Phoenix.
Ray Liester gets promoted to press-room manager from his previous duties as USA Today Press supervisor. What happens? The quality rank for USAT in Phoenix goes from 35 to #1 One in the company. Nice Job to the Phoenix Pressmen on this crew for doing professional work once a micro-managing Gannettoid is taken out of the equation. Nice Job to Phoenix GCIU/IBT Local 58M pressman that continuously put out a superior product (when unqualified leaders are promoted out of the way). How does Gannett show their appreciation. Installing more cameras proposing much lower wages and benefits. If you want Phoenix to stay number 1 Dale Carpenter You better Take care of the rank and file, and keep promoting the "talent" to where they can do no harm.

    2. Those new cameras are going to show a lot of things like people doing their jobs. I know this is hard for Corporate to fathom; equipment is aging and breaking down at a regular clip. Cannibalizing parts from dead units is the general fix now. The revolving brands of paper aren't of the best quality. Bean-counters are dictating "cost saving" edicts such as expiring core sizes... I counted five newspaper lengths left on a core last night. Russian Roulette with their press runs. It's almost like Gannett management is purposely manufacturing failure to justify "doing something" aka "cameras!"

    4. why is the draw numbers so low with the snowbirds in town ????

    5. It's inbred in Gannett's culture... Same reasoning goes into building "fixes" like duck-taping broken door handles and placing buckets under sinks when they leak. We've all seen these. Gannett's mgmt. doesn't understand how their bean-counting cuts undermine everything. It's systemic.

    2. I always dislike the growing use of e-cards like this. Sending a handwritten note thanking for business shows care, whereas sending an email (or worse, a mass email which some do) with instructions for a client to 'click here' is just lazy. (Yeah, and cheap, which is why Usat does it).

With all that said, this sure is a ho-hum e-card. I can't imagine anybody receiving it thinking that this is innovative. Any other news organization - or 'digital first' companies could certainly put together something more dynamic. Oh well.

Gannett's Detroit JOA partner is merging: MediaNews Group will combine with 21st Century Media as soon as the end of the year. [21st Century Media is the former Journal Register Co.]

  9. It was just a matter of time with marketing. Tom The Sports Guy suffered the same fate. No extra week of pure profit this year (the 5-4-4 calendar) and people immune from cuts will learn of the conditions the rest of us live under. Can't way for Dickey's annual email next week going on about how all of us worked so hard to transform the company, how we faced such difficult circumstances and prevailed. It will make me feel great, until the Q1 layoffs are announced and I'm one of them.

  10. 6:46, I don't have any personal knowledge of anything you wrote. But I have to admit your last sentence made me laugh. We have all thought that at one point or another about something.

  11. I wonder about layoffs...... Q-1? Q-2? I'm thinking mid Q-1; strickly my opinion......

  12. Interesting profile of Gannett CEO Matore. "People decisions are the most difficult decisions to make" it quotes her as saying. Odd, that. When she decided that taking away everything I had been promised from Gannett, she made it look easy...

    1. So original. Every CEO on the planet has said the same thing at some point. To say the opposite would be a PR disaster. I take nothing from what she said.

    5. Brilliant, Jim. Don't you have some 4-year-old article to retype and post?

  15. This is 11:51. Jim was right to remove the comments involving the names of individuals. But for those who had seen the comments, I just wanted to set the record straight as regards why the person left Gannett.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
