  1. And yet you all stay.
Don't you feel a little bit like whores who pimp themselves for a paycheck?
You complain and name call and whine, yet day after day you help Gannett maintain their huge cashflow.
What else would you call it?

  3. Thanks for daily affirmation, 7:54. Yawn.

  4. Does Proctor and Gamble tell you when they change their packaging so you get 33 ounces instead of 36? Does Kimberly-Clark tell you when each square of toilet tissue is now 3.56" instead of 3.75"? Does Wal-Mart tell you they forced a supplier to go overseas and use cheaper materials for the Wal-Mart version of Mr. Coffee?

At best, their corporate public relations may say that they've adjusted their product to maintain a consumer price point.

Why do we feel the need to beat consumers over the head that they are getting less and paying the same? We always have prided ourselves on having smarter audience, let's pretend that we know that they know we're giving them less and drop the pretense already.

"More room on the breakfast table for coffee and cereal"? Seriously. Like there was anyone, anywhere that was clamoring for that.

Give the readers credit for having a brain, and have some self-respect when explaining product changes.

  5. 7:54 AM - In your case, boring.

Seriously, Jim - why do you keep approving this person's comments?

  6. SHREVEPORT Griffin at it again. You CANNOT threaten employees for posting on this blog. Jim has created a place for us to come and share with other Gannette employees and until he takes his site down you are not allowed to tell employees they will be fired for posting here. I am not a journalist but I do believe in freedom of speech. Please check your handbook!!!!!!!!

  7. Caption on the latest photo essay on the Enquirer's web front:

"From swimming to gymnastics to field hockey and table tennis, a lot happened overnight at the Olympics in London. Since you were probably sleeping, here is a recap of what's been going on."

Evidently they don't realize that London is 6 hours ahead. All the events yesterday were done before most people went to bed last night. There weren't any major swimming, gymnastics, field hockey, or table tennis events that took place that early today in London. Even if you slept until 8 you still didn't miss anything.

  8. 8:38 - This blog may not be a reason for firing, but trust me, if Gannett knows which employees are posting negative comments, they can come up with a thousand other reasons to eliminate your job. Just food for thought. Now if I were you, I'd grow some, confront the people you have a problem with like a man, and get back to work.

    1. From lack of postings here about the courier post over recent months, it is fairly obvious that those who left (for various reasons) probably were the primary posters here. Place is still rotten to the core.

    2. There are so few of us left, it doesn't feel safe to post much. Too easy to be identified. We've been warned for years not to post here. Plus, there's little to fight for. It is pointless.

    3. Right. The clown running the advertising department has threatened those he thinks are contributors to this blog. Little does he know that several of his favorite losers think he's an idiot but hang on because they have him fooled and continue to get away with doing practically nothing.

  9. 8:38 shreveport pressman here who was at the meeting and cannot believe he did this . I am so scared Griffin.

  10. To 8:38 where does Shreveport get these people from. Can Griffing concentrate on getting a better product out the door and worrying less about this blog. Griffin work with Bailey and get the citizens of your city something they can be prooud of. From reading here on Jim's blog the two of you need some people skill training so the least you can do is what you are being paid to do-GET A BETTER PRODUCT OUT THE DOOR!

  11. 9:22 AND lawyers can find a thousand other reasons to have Gannet in court and that could also eliminate your job!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yeah, 9:22, because confronting supervisors face to face has had such a positive response through Gannett's history!

People come here to show the company that it's not just one person with these opinions, it's dozens, hundreds, probably more. And if that many people think there are problems, then it might be advisable to look into it.

Your "grow some" comment reeks of the usual bullying attitude Gannett is so well known for. Why don't you "grow some" and tell us all which half-sized community paper you're the managing editor for?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Agreed 12:50, and getting worse...

  14. 9:22 I followed proper channels and did everything face to face. Trying to articulate my points in best way possible. I was met with threats, yelling and sudden paper trail to eliminate me for the smallest real or imagined infractions. Going on eBay during work time and making personal calls. Because I know that no one else did such radical stuff. So after a dozen years of above average work reviews I was fired. I had lawsuit won small amount of money like 12k after lawyer and other fees maybe walked with 8k. Never was able to get another job and watched my life fall apart. Grow some is especially funny if you are management because I never dealt with a bigger group of backstabbing, cowards thats main objective was to cover their own ass and kiss the person above them asses.

  15. 12:50 I miss Cherry Hill's floor pooper.

  16. Let them fire me for posting..It's called early retirement off the backs of the fat cats who will be paying me for their lack of common sense. Be real people, it's a lawsuit they can not win and they know it

    1. It should be noted that Shreveport is in a 'right-to-screw-the-worker state'. As an employee-at-will, you have no grievance/arbitration rights. You may be discharged 'at-will'.

  17. Check out today's unfortunate ad placement, thanks to Romenesko. It's at delawareonline, a

  20. According to Paidcontent.com Gannett is number 38 in the world for Paid Content revenue.

  21. 9:45 - There is hardly anyone left in Shreveport to make that happen. I look around and I hardly recognize anyone anymore. I think it's too far gone to be saved.

  22. Another Friggin' Chicken competitor in Gannett's markets:

    http://www.sweetjack.com/

Owned by Cumulus, who has very deep pockets. Hear them on the radio advertising every day, which is the equivalent of a "house" ad for them, in that it doesn't cost them any money.

  23. I agree. This blog has lost it's purpose and usefulness with little revelance. I think Jim feels the same as he is no longer begging for funding.

Time to shut it down Jim. And no doubt you would earn a small fortune as Gannett would pay dearly for the names and emails of all those who have posted on here these past years.

  24. We now have Tom Claybaugh in Salisbury. Wonder how long before he figures out that there are too many Chiefs in Advertising and not enough Indians. He could save thousands of dollars just by elimnating one of the two Managers Ad Managers.

  26. The NJ group announced 3 management promotions today. Whoooeeeeee! In obviously less important news, some of the NJ papers remain horribly understaffed without any care from the top and people expected to compromise their health and well-being to get the work done. By all means let's make sure money that could fund reporters be used to pad management salaries instead. Just a chip off the old corporate block.

  27. PaidContent50 rates Gannett number 38 in the WORLD

  28. It is interesting that with more going on at Gannett than ever before (paywalls, selling buildings, new leadership at USA Today, USAT Sports Inc., Dealchicken and all the rest), the blog seems to be slowly running out of steam.

Maybe there's just so much denunciation one blog can stand, or it's all playted out. Even Jim, who I remember from his days as a finance reporter, seems to be losing interest (as he did in most things in those days).

I think he may move on soon. Certainly readers seem to be.

And no, I'm not a corporate troll nor a denouncer. Just an increasingly disinterested reader.

  29. Many months ago, staffer at Cherry Hill left a message on my phone and begged me to come back and do work for them. With the loads of money I happily make at my currrent gig outside of the newspaper industry, why do I even care of stooping down to their level and make a return. Good luck to them.

  31. It does seem the blog is over? Jim updates it less and less, and when he does there are only five or six new comments even after half a day.

    Strange.

  33. 12:58 Nope. I've just been taking occasionally breaks during the annual summer news slow period.

  34. Nope. The blog is dying. Jim has to moderate all the time now, either because he knows people will get him in trouble, or because he knows he will be buried with comments that bash him.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 2:24 I do, in fact, have concerns about comments regarding a member of the Gannett Leadership Team. That's one reason why I'm moderating very carefully now.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jim, this doesnt have to be publically posted. But maybe people would take you more seriously if you replaced your childhood picture with something current. Cute pix, but It hurts your cred.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 10:25 - The same thing is going on in Shreveport. The current leadership treats their people like shit, lets everyone go and then begs them to come back. Pathetic. Not many people are running back to help out. I used to enjoy working here, and now I'm looking for a job.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 7:35, Jim blew his cred a long time ago.

Jim @ 3:50, thanks for confirming what I already knew. It's really no secret. It would be easy to name the leadership team member, too.

  39. Claybaugh isn't after ad sales managers in Salisbury. Hell, it outsell all of them rolled together on his own.

He wasn't brought to Salisbury to fix advertising. He was brought to Salisbury to keep score on his new "boss" the Anchorman for his "real" boss Michael Kane.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
