The website Trademarkia, which keeps track of U.S. trademark activity, noticed the following:

On Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, a U.S. federal trademark registration number 85248025 was filed for KISMT by Gannett Co. Earlier: GCI seeks to trademark "It's all within reach" slogan.

  1. Kismet is fate or fortune to the majority of Americans, but in Islam it's the expression of the will of Allah. Do we want to go pickin' this fight?

"Therefore, you shall reverence Him as much as you can, and listen, and obey, and give for your own good. Anyone who is protected from his own stinginess, these are the successful ones."

  3. Gannett has owned kismt.com since November 3, 2010. See http://whois.domaintools.com/kismt.com

The contact e-mail address appears to be that of Linda Vo, an audience research manager at ContentOne - though it's a Gmail account, not a Gannett one. Odd.

  4. I've seen an initiative here at my digital company where managers across different organizations have joined to create "strike teams" that are like think tanks for new ideas on how to approach certain areas of content within the Gannett world.

I'm not personally involved, so I forget what they're calling it, and I don't know so much about the details. But, I'm pretty sure this is what Craig was talking about in his most recent memo. I don't know how much traction it's gaining - my boss mentioned it exactly one time and then never again.

I don't know whether or not it will have anything to do with today's big announcement, but it certainly does inform the notion that the higher-ups are trying to actively reinvent the company.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
