  1. In article today Cannibals at the Gates in the Publishing Industry: A Wall Street Transcript Interview with Richard Tullo, Director of Research at Albert Fried & Company, LLC from the Wall Street Transcript Tullo blasted the newspaper industry.

Mr. Tullo: Starting in 2007, we were at ground zero for the disruption and collapse of the newspaper, magazine and yellow pages industries. In a prior firm, I covered those stocks, and we saw all the mistakes made in the race for digital dollars, which turned into digital pennies at best.

"The newspaper industry thought they understood what was going on and actually they didn't, because they chased incremental revenue gains on selling to digital. They didn't realize the level of cannibalization and disruption that occurs in other sources, and they didn't really think about the end game...

    4. Really? What is that point of a lame, juvenile remark like that? It says so much more about you than the person you criticize. Grow up.

  3. Veteran's Day is not a holiday in Louisville, nor MLK Day.

  5. My site no Veterans Day. We run editorials telling everybody how great the holiday is, but don't observe it ourselves.

  7. Veterans Day allows the media to anoint itself in an orgy of sanctimony and self-righteousness. I am a veteran but I would much rather see an effort to use the occasion for some self-examination on why, since WWII, we seek out wars that have nothing to do with our national security and why we refuse to learn the lessons of the previous war. The larger question is why do we repeatedly send our troops into harm's way only to die for nothing. Waving the flag doesn't validate what happened in Vietnam or Grenada or Iraq, just to maintain some definition of national manhood. We should find a way to glorify peace, not war.

    1. You're entitled to your opinion, and the rest of us are entitled to say bollocks.

Thank God for this annual reminder that every day ought to be Veterans Day.

    5. We should support veterans, but not the politicians who so readily make more of them for no good reason. 11:08 offered a fine opinion.

    6. No. The original comment was ignorant and repugnant. No doubt it and the supporting comments are from the usual suspects—"journalists".

    7. The original comment was spot on. The people who are offended likely can't think for themselves.

  8. Gannett does not treat Veteran's Day as a holiday at any of its properties. When I worked in Pensacola, not only did they not give Veteran's Day off, they also did not give Memorial Day off - strange for a market that has such a significant military presence.

    1. that is just false - Gannett recognizes Memorial Day BUT the paper still has to publish so some departments still have to work but they get another day off or holiday pay in exchange.

    2. Sorry, it is not false. The Pensacola News Journal did not give Memorial Day off as a holiday when I worked there in the 1990s. I worked at other Gannett properties before and after my tour in Pensacola that did give the day off.

    3. It's a customer serving business. It can't completely close on a holiday because they still need to create and sell a product.

    4. No kidding. We're talking about whether Veteran's Day is recognized as a holiday at the local sites, meaning most are actually getting a paid day off and the crew that is working is getting holiday pay (or typically a chance to select another paid day off.)

  9. At USA TODAY, you get three floating holidays to use for whatever day you want. Including Veteran's Day.

    1. Not sure about USA Today, but I get the 3 floating holidays. I've worked in a few different industries, and not one of them gave employees off for Veterans Day.

  10. I actually have the day off. Then again, it's the first Veterans Day since I left Gannett. I plan to actually participate in the Veterans Day parade instead of just watching it pass by the newspaper office as I tried to appease clueless editors.
My new employer also gives two days off for Thanksgiving and Christmas each. I've never had that in all the years I've been a journalist.
    It feels great.

  11. Does any Gannett site observe Martin Luther King Day? Mine doesn't.

    1. Phoenix does, because of scandals involving the AZ governor and MLK day a few decades ago.

    2. Before the Republic (CNI) was bought by Gannett, the Pulliam family bestowed upon its employees a paid MLK holiday. Unfortunately, it was not a completely altruistic gesture in that Phoenix was a looming Super Bowl candidate at the time. A paid MLK holiday was just the ticket. We got the Super Bowl. Of course Gannett, barring any principles, could care less about the man and wants all vestiges of this holiday eradicated.
