    1. Both - they put enough pressure on you that you'll leave on your own.

  3. Add one more to the lay off spreadsheet for Cincinnati. A 40 year employee had her career ended. She was a fair manager, worked hard and was a wealth of knowledge. I guess her boss thought she was too old and too experienced for the new business model. Not old enough to retire. Oh yeah...she got the news 12 weeks after her husband passed away from brain cancer. An end to an era. It is amazing to see some employees still employed full time who do not have enough work to make up full time hours or who are duplicating corporate consolidation efforts.

    1. The local blogger and so-called competitor weeklies are already kicking our ass on breaking news stories. But we have lots of evergreen stories written last week up on the website. And they expect me to sell advertising when the newsroom is so obviously unable to keep up? When I make sales calls, I'm on the constant defensive about why we don't have any new news ever.

    2. 10:40, I am sure you are on target with your comments. It might be a different story however if... You sales reps actually were making ad goals of years past...which provided the revenue to support newsrooms of years past.... Which were made up of more than enough reporters, photographers, copy editors, page designers and editors to produce a quality newspaper respected in the community...should I go on? How many years did I hear "Advertising pays your salary?" We'll, sales rep, no wonder newsroom can't keep up. Not enough of them left. Only have yourself to blame ... At least in part!

Lower than the pants on a wanna-be-gangster!

Somehow we keep trucking with the skeleton crew we have, but vacation and Holidays are really killing us.

  5. Last week, a poster mentioned a "big announcement" at Florida Today set for last Thursday. Was that just someone stirring the pot, or did something big go down?

  7. The Clarion-Ledger's Madison County Herald has become a complete joke since they laid off the lone remaining reporter for Madison County. VIP (the CL's society magazine) now oversees the MCH. Today's edition had one staff-written (Clarion-Ledger staffer) story, a month-old feature. Rest of the stories were press releases. And not even re-writes of press releases. Looks like unedited press releases. Only reason CL didn't eliminate the MC Herald is that it needs to maintain an office in Madison County to keep the contracts for the legal ads. What I read today is not a journalism product at all, and that's one more sad commentary on what has happened to Mississippi's once-proud state-wide newspaper.

    1. You are so correct regarding The Madison County Herald. What once was a vibrant news source for Madison County, is now junk. The loss of The Herald as a reputable news source, will only help The Madison County Journal and Northside Sun to grow with vigor

    2. I see the future of legals moving to the competitors sooner than later. Another ignorant decision by management. Not too long ago a decision was made to end The Clinton News. The town who supported the paper with news and advertising decided to start their own paper, The Clinton Courier and that has put a damper on advertising from Clinton into The Clarion-Ledger. The advertising reps have to be going hungry!

  8. Why doesn't Gannett take part in the ASNE survey on minorities in newsrooms? http://asne.org/content.asp?pl=121&sl=284&contentid=284

Are the numbers that bad? Has Gannett quietly dropped its emphasis on diversity in newsrooms and coverage?

  9. @7:46 p.m. What gives you the impression that Gannett doesn't participate? The first quote in your link comes from a Gannett editor in Rochester. Also, the Gannett newspaper I work at, and the Gannett papers closest to it, are also listed in the census listings at

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
