  1. The paywall is coming to my website soon, so I tested the Des Moines Register's paywall and found that it's as easy to bypass as I thought.

Here's what you do with Internet Explorer (and other browsers have similar features):

    - Click on the wheel in the upper right corner, which takes you to browser settings.

    - Click on "Internet options."

    - Click the box to "Delete browsing history on exit." (This automatically includes cookies. If you have changed that setting previously, you'll need to reset it to include cookies.)

    - Click "Apply" and then "OK."

From that point on, you can read up to 20 stories, then close the browser and reopen it to read up to 20 more. And so on.

    - There is no limit. All of the stories are free.

An alternative: Read 20 stories a month in IE, 20 more stories in Firefox and 20 more stories in Chrome.

So much for the paywall. The same technique or similar ones can bypass most other paywalls out there.

    - A reader

  2. Shreveport had a visitor last Friday. Bailey lead Greiwe through our department as if he knew who we were. We do not see him and will probably not see him until she visits again. It is pathetic that he does not know his employees and I sure hope Greiwe saw right through him. Greiwe should make a surprise visit and catch him off guard. We were told she was coming (you know we had to clean up). Shreveport normally has an unstated dress down day on Friday but I saw more suits than I have seen this year. Why can't we show Greiwe how we really work and why could we not talk with her alone. She should know that the man in charge Bailey does not care about his employees or his advertisers yet he wants us to bring in the advertising dollars. Bailey will not visit our department again until it benefits him. Greiwe please help us and give us someone who wants to be in Shreveport with common working people in a common community. Bailey big man attitude will continue to hurt The Times and our community.

  3. I am a subscriber of the News-Press in Ft. Myers, Florida. In today's paper, one of the editors writes in his column that the News-Press is rolling out a digital subscription model this fall. He states "We are not adopting a paywall, but we will eventually charge for the valuable and engaging work our journalists do for for the community that appears on news-press.com." I found this blog by happenstance a few months ago while searching for another blog - can you shed some light on this? How can there be a charge and no paywall? Thank you!

  7. 10:56 you're so smart. Wow. But what's the point of your post? You say you work for a Gannett paper. Gannett is using the paywall as a way to boost revenue. Revenue that helps pay your salary. So what is the logic of, you, the Gannett employee, showing people how they can rip YOU off?

    1. Because GCI ripped me off. And you?

  8. That's correct, 10:56, re: getting around the paywall.
You can also use Incognito mode in Chrome, I've been told. In Safari, I just clear the cookie for my USCP "newsletter" (it's under Preferences), reset Safari and empty the cache.

  9. 11:38 I thought I was the only one to notice this. Greiwe looks like a smart woman so I am sure she knew he was putting on an act. I wanted to let her know that I have not seen the man she was walking around with except at our once a month employee meeting. And even at this meeting he stands up front lost calling employees the wrong names, asking for employees sitting on the front row right in front of him and not aware of products we put out. Oh and I cannot forget his servant Barber who thinks this man is made of glass that will beak if we get next to him. I have no clue who is making BIG MAN BAILEY remain in Shreveport because he does not want to be here with us or this community!!!!!!!

  10. Speaking of Shreveport - Griffin at it again this time with his sidekick Oswald. Can someone please tell these two you cannot threaten employees when work does not go as planned. Production employees make mistakes and so does production manager Griffin and the sidekick salesman Oswald. I don't know if Fiorito knows what he has in these two but I hope he wakes up before he has no one to put this paper out. Zanmiller had them under control but with him gone they are running loose all over the place.

  11. Check out AZ Republic Editor Randy Lovely's piece today prepping the readers for all the price increases by saying there will be all kinds of great new content.

Bleh. I will not be renewing my subscription when it ends. I get NYT every day, and will continue, even though it costs a fortune.

  12. @12:19 – The editor's playing a dishonest game not unlike how Clinton once said it’s a matter of what is is.

In Gannett’s case, they’re calling it a metered approach, not a paywall. That is you’ll get to read X number of stories per month for example. If you’re interested in reading more, then you’ll have to pay for it, hence why most are honest enough to call it what it is, a paywall.

Playing fast and loose with what Gannett calls it further damages the credibility it has left with its declining reader base which is dumb.

  13. 4:16 - Greiwe is not smart. She and Hollingsworth hired DB. They don't know Shreveport and they don't care.

  14. If you are using the Desert Suns TV Section from yesterdays paper it has next weeks schedule in it. Not useful for this week since it starts on the 25th.

  15. GPS has just about restructured themselfs out of any true talent, while they are sending e-mails and having their group conference calls other media companys are setting up and will push GPS out of the competition.

How do I know you ask?.... I was just recruited by one of them... goodbye old freind you once were a giant that most envied, now your a shiney empty building.

  16. How the hell do I get out if this Gannett shithole?
I apply and apply and still nothing. Maybe I need to stop saying Gannett and pretend it's another company?

Take it from someone who was laid off more than a year ago: There are no jobs out there and journalism is a dead career. Consider a career change...

  18. 4:35 regardless if something goes right or wrong there is a right way and wrong way to talk to employees, especially when they don't answer to you. I don't think production employees answer to a salesman! Oswald bhas been a loose cannon since he got here, confrontations from day one. Usually over facts and capabilities he has no clue about. Griffin does nothing to back him down in fact takes Oswalds side in front of employees. Hope Greg F. sees through this smoke screen.

  19. 7:19, I too found out the hard way so may I suggest you carefully look at your resume and remove the words "newspaper" unless it's in the name of your company. Re-think your approach and the business capabilities you bring to whatever job posting you may be looking at without mentioning "newspapers" as everybody knows newspapers and the general public's view is not especially positive. The general public also doesn't know the many different and transferrable skills, but assumes newspaper skills are unique and exclusively related to newspapers.

    Best of luck to you.

  20. Lovely's comments today and those made by Zidich last week sound great! Positive and forward thinking. But I find it difficult to believe that any advertiser in the Phoenix market who's reading the paper will think the quality is anything but far from what it was a few short years ago. The paper is mostly ads, wire reports and yesterday's news, often news reported online a few days ago. Lovely and Zidich are saying the right things from Gannett's perspective, do they really think people in the market will fall for it? The product speaks louder than corporate gloating.

  21. You could realize no one will hire you because you are not a good job candidate,. After all, there's a reason you work here.

  22. The Fort Collins Coloradoan is a small fish in Gannett's big pond. And small minds are running it. Sunday, for example, a dead body was found about 7:40 a.m. MDT at a city park in the southeast side of town. As of 10 p.m. MDT Sunday, the Coloradoan had not reported it. The Coloradoan didn't have any news updates Sunday, too, except for the Saturday overnight postings. The Loveland (Colo.) Reporter-Herald, a regional competitor, had a story posted at 3 p.m. Sunday, about the same time the city sent out a news release. Fort Collins readers shouldn't be surprised; that's what has been happening since Josh Awtry took over as executive editor late in 2011. Awtry thinks he's smarter than everyone else, but he has not had one original idea. Awtry's weekly column this Sunday showed what a hard-news journalist he is: He wrote about what it's like to wear the DealChicken costume. Can't wait for more exposes!

  24. Wow Anonymous 12:03 AM, talk about a small mind. You either work for Loveland (CO) Reporter or you don't read the Coloradan regularly. I've met Josh Awty at many community events and he is doing great things in our community. The Coloradoan is damn lucky to have made the BIG upgrade with their editor choice!

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
