USAT | Post-Banikarim, elitist news in McPaper

Chief Marketing Officer Maryam Banikarim famously said USA Today's readers aren't trying to be snooty -- unlike those at The Wall Street Journal or The New York Times.

Howells don't read USAT
"The person who reads USA Today is quite successful and affluent, but they’re not focused on being elitist,'' she told industry trade paper Adweek in September.

And yet I continue seeing more news from those elitist-focused rags in USAT. Here's some today from the NYT.

  1. Funny, yet sad.
Adding the scribbler's "unrepentant news junkie who loves breaking news" bio - classic.

As long as the NYT and WSJ can break the stories, because they employ real journalists who have sources they've cultivated for years, USAT will be able to kill dead trees 5 days a week.

And yet, the USCP newsletters are so gutted that they'll never rise so low.

  2. I can't fault USAT for linking to that New York Times Sandusky story; I read every word of it today. The NYT is kicking butt.

  3. I wonder if NYTimes did the American Express small business stories? Ha!

  5. NYT and WSJ kicks our ass every single day. They understand that distribution and platforms mean nothing without great content to ride along.

  7. Spot on, 9:33. And, Jim, your photo illustrations from "classic" tv shows are a hoot.
