On eve of shutdown, DealChicken chases 'moms'

Gannett is trying to convert hundreds of thousands of Moms Like Me users into DealChicken subscribers, according to an e-mail pitch I got early this evening -- a day before the scheduled shutdown of the Moms network. Here's the e-mail:

DealChicken knows moms really rule the roost, and the henhouse budget. That’s why DealChicken has been saving moms like you barrels of bucks. How? By hatching deals on the best local restaurants, salons and fun, family-friendly activities near you, at massive discounts.

Sign up to get emails featuring the day’s freshest deal. DealChicken has launched in over 20 cities already, but is still on the move! (Find out if DealChicken is headed your way.) With 50% to 90% savings, it’s time to get cracking!

Related: A Moms discussion leader in Cleveland is seeking signatures on a petition to save the network. Here's the petition.

  1. Smart move. It's the kind of aggressive thinking we need!

  2. Smart? Like any of the MLM users who are pissed off at Gannett yanking their site are going to turn around and choke Gannett's chicken.

They have absolutely no clue when it comes to anything online.

  3. Genius! Hindsight is better than NO SIGHT! The cries for true leadership are LOUDER than ever.

  4. This is a good move. That way, when we shutter Deal Chicken in six months, the people who were pissed off about Moms Like Me shutting down can hate Gannett twice as much.

Not to worry, though, that corporate branding campaign will fix everything.

  5. They should have offered some sort of coupon to Moms users.

  6. 10:24 - That thinking is way too innovative for Gannett. Time to change companies.

  7. Let's get something straight, Martore always wanted to close down MomsLikeMe. Even when Saradakis was the head of digital, she fought with him to shut it down.

I remember a meeting that Saradakis had with Dubow and Martore in early 2009 when he came back to discuss the outcome to his direct reports, he was clear in saying to us that Martore wants to shut it down and will see to it that MLM does not exist.

So, for all of the people in the field that adore this tyrant, Gracia Martore, get over it, she makes commands from her corner office and has here minions like David Payne and Bob Dickey do her dirty work.

Remember, this woman has a bean counter for a newspaper company her whole life. It doesn't get more real than that!

  8. The moms like me site was a great place to meet women (aka Cougars and MILFs). It was amazing to me how many women are available while their husbands were at work and looking for another guy. I'll personally be sad to see the site go. Guy in Phoenix.

  9. Reminds me of the big 2008 layoffs where until somebody spoke out against it - week after week they spammed your "snail mailbox" with "special" subscription offers! Now tell me, WHO after being laid off would even consider setting aside some of their "Unemployment Check Money" for a subscription?

    Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
When one steps foot outside the company's door for the very last time - the Koolaid Spell wears off!

  10. The fools are off and running in this one. 7:18, no one is buying your crap. You have the Sears catalog out and open to the lingerie section on your table, and that's the cold reality.

  11. All the MLM content creators (viewers) have finally gravitated to cafemom.com.

The "Shue" is on the other foot, lol.

  12. What would be the purpose in killing off the MLM site?

  13. "Gannett: Its all within reach. Except MLM, seriously, F that site."

  14. Is Martore a MOM?

  15. The Moms sites were a place for primarily stay-at-home moms to connect with other moms. Whether Martore is a mother or not doesn't matter, a workaholic control freak accountant like her would never understand the value of the Moms sites.

  18. Stupid MLM Techs, couldn't ever pull their heads out of their asses and MLM never ran right. Ever. Must be why they thought 11:45 = 11:59.

I hope you all lose your asses! Suck it, Gannett!

  19. Gannett will not be receiving any of my business at DealChicken, ever. It is obvious that Gannett's PR department is clueless on how to generate dollars from a large customer base with purchasing power. Sending a mass DealChicken advertisement email to the users of MLM on the day of closing of their site was tacky and thoughtless; it was also a very bad publicity move.

Who ever approved the chicken on the DealChicken website deserves to be fired; the website looks unprofessional.

I will be sticking with groupon. Thank you.

  20. Gannett will never have my business on DealChicken. They have no appreciation or loyalty to their customers.

  21. Gannett sent a mass advertising email regarding DealChicken to the users of MLM on the day of closing of their site. This was not a savvy publicity move, using a large population of potential customers who were already upset.

How many of moms from the MLM site, who were disenfranchised by Gannett, are really going to use DealChicken?

Some one with some common sense. Do you work for Gannett?

  23. Clicking on MLM's link now redirects to Corporate's homepage, where there's no explanation that the network has been closed.

    Does that make sense?

  24. Gannett is kidding right?? Not only will I not use it, but I'll go out of my way to tell others not to as well. I agree with the above poster, Gannett has no appreciation or loyalty to their customers.

  25. That's funny, Jim.
When I type in www.WorstRunCompany.com, it also redirects me to Gannett's corporate home page.

    And every week thereafter.

Not any more. I got a better job with a company run by people that know what they're doing.

  29. Wow my snarky comment to the profane poster gets the boot....but the profane post remains....
