  2. Gannett is losing one of the truly good journalists with the announcement that Bob Moore is leaving Fort Collins to work for Media News.

  3. Thanks for posting that, Bob. Never heard of you, by the way, but going on to Media News isn't a cause for celebration.

  4. Last night, I criticized the Reno Gazette-Journal's coverage of its air race disaster because I think the blog-like update format it uses is tough to follow.

In fairness, I'd like to say that the site looks very good now. The amount of information is impressive and it's easy to find and navigate through. I'm still not a fan of the way the breaking news was handled, but credit is due where credit is due. Things look really good now.

I agree with 3:42. And glad to do so. Myself, I've been a communications volunteer at these air races, pylons and flight line. Even wrote a feature (before I was with Gannett). Often the RGJ's coverage of lots of things in recent years has sucked and I've said so while noting it's more the fault of short staff jumping through 10 million hoops.

But in this case, they've done an incredible job, short staff or no. I used to read this paper front-to-back every single day, all my life. Here's an example of great coverage despite, indeed in the face of, a company that seems hell-bent on self-destruction.

  11. How long is USAT going to stick with that all-black 9/11 homepage takeover? How much $ is it getting from that National Guard ad in the forehead?

  14. I just clicked on the home page for the Arizona Republic's azcentral.com, and I got one of those obnoxious popup ads, as usual. But I had to laugh this time because the ad was for Groupon.com instead of the Deal Chicken. Whoops.

  15. Bob Moore hasn't moved that far from Gannett. He's going to the El Paso Times, which is run by a partnership of MediaNews and Gannett. http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/09/14/3368191/coloradoan-editor-to-join-el-paso.html

  16. How much paper and ink is wasted by the people who are doing the draws for Florida Today? Last week we sold great on Sunday, mostly due to the 9/11 coverage. Do you think they would know that and do this week's draws accordingly? NO! They not only kept the draws the same, they raised a bunch of them, some out of sight. We don't know what rules or orders they are under but I'd almost bet I'd make more money if we got paid by what we waste! And I'd also bet it isn't just our paper.

  17. Jim,
Why all the deleted posts? Are they really that bad? I tried to post a sarcastic remark about how many president rings it took to steer circulation down the drain and it never appeared.

  19. Gannett will have to sell some properties. Look for clusters that will be ceded. The biggest sale? NJ to Singleton. It'll come fast, and as a surprise, in late Fall.

  20. Jim is working hard to appease the Gannett executives. Jim's stance. "Stop making fun of Gannett executives you Gannett peon" Jim is chocking on the Gannett pole.

  23. Just wanted to share a link to the obit for John Curran, a former Gannettoid and USA Today loaner who left Gannett for the Associated Press. John died this weekend at the age of 54 while mowing his lawn in Vermont.

  24. Oh my God! I worked with John Curran at the AP, and he's my age. And he died of a heart attack? Wow.

John was a great guy and a hard worker. He'll be missed.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
