  2. Here's our top headline on the Web today.

Dwindling homeland secruity funds worry emergency officials

    Secruity? Seriously?

  3. I'm sure the haters will have something negative to say, but IMO Westchester is doing an amazing job of covering Irene on their website.

  5. 10:23 - Are you serious? Coverage has been horrendous. Everyone in the area has been relying on News12 online and on TV for info.

Lohud ran nothing but AP photos from North Carolina on the main page of the site all day yesterday. Coverage has been abysmal and today's paper had just a couple of locally produced stories - the rest was all wire copy.

  6. 11:33 You obviously didn't look at the web site.

  7. Just like they way they dropped the ball with the Earthquake, the Journal News came up very small with Hurricane coverage.

  8. tThe copy editors and reporters that post on this blog are like a bunch of little girls, no wonder GCI wants to get rid of most of you. Take a look at your self's, I don't see any Edward R. Murrow's among any of you so called unprofessional writers. I think you should all have to re-apply for your jobs, this way GCI can weed out all the dead wood (B) writers

  9. Article on Takeover/LBO candidates has Gannett listed as on of the Top 18 potentials:

Hey, maybe AOHell will do it.
They were stupid enough to buy Puffy Ho for $315M.

  10. AOheLl doesn't seem like a candidate to buy Gannett. There are rumors in the financial press that they're prepping themselves for a sale. Could Gannett end up buying AOL in some twisted universe?

  11. 12:07: It's "Edward R. Murrows" not "Edward R. Murrow's," and since he was a broadcast giant and not a newspaper guy, the analogy doesn't quite work. Within the context of the point you were attempting to make, H. L. Mencken would have been the better choice.

That, in addition to the abundance of either typos or just lapses of knowledge of how the English language works, makes you an unsuitable critic of professional writers. But nice try.

  12. Hurricane news totally blown out of proportion, not just by Gannett outlets, but by essentially every major newspaper and television station. There seems to be no one in newsroom anymore willing to make those fine distinctions between an important story and a mega story. It's like no one wants to get beat so they play everything like it's the end of the world, without paying attention to proportion, facts or even science. This was a category 1 storm most of the time. Yet, the media, followed right behind the politicians (who are all afraid of being Katrina-ized) falling all over themselves to look the most concerned. Gannett and other major media lost their collective minds over Irene and were making statements like "storm of the century" and "this is the one we've been dreading for decadeds." Ridiculous. This isn't journalism. This is just following the herd. With few people left in newsrooms to pass down things like historical perspective, well, this is what you get from reporting... unfounded, inaccurate hysteria and fluff to fill airtime and news pages. Shame on the media!

  13. New Jersey Group readers will be interested in the following story, originally published Aug. 21:

Via Christi Health of Wichita, Kan., announced William “Skip” Hidlay as the new executive director of Communications Monday. Hidlay will begin his duties on Aug. 28. He has served as a consultant at Via Christi for the past three months.

Hidlay spent his previous career in the newspaper industry, where he served in executive leadership positions at several newspapers in New Jersey before joining the Wichita Eagle as president and publisher from March 2010 to May 2011.

Prior to working at the Eagle, Hidlay served as president and publisher of the Courier News in Somerville and the Home News Tribune in East Brunswick, New Jersey. He also served as executive editor and vice president/news of the Asbury Park Press, and executive editor of the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill.

  14. It's part of the globalist's agenda, which all media plays into. Keep the populace scared. And...if you're watching what the storm is doing, you're not watching anything else!

I long for the day all media, especially newspapers, were their own entities instead of corporate and political puppets!

  15. I use this forum to pop-off at the Journal News and its inane leadership but today I have to say that I think they did a commendable job covering Irene. Good job Journal News!

  18. 3:17 PM, Ahem! I'm sick of it. I didn't watch the news since Friday because it.

I've lived through 10 hurricanes, a cat 1 is just a windy, rainy day.

  19. Anyone who thinks that papers have overblown the hurricane story should visit the Vineland Daily Journal's Web site. They appeared to have taken Sunday off: latest updates on the site Sunday evening are from Saturday afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The Vineland paper has really gone down the tubes...to think that years 25 ago, when family-owned, it kept The Press of Atlantic City at bay. And it was a fine training ground for young talent and a nice community for long-term talent who raised families. The Big G ran it into the ground.

NJ is such a great news state. What a perfect time for all the corrupt politicos and other screw ups to run amok without any accountability.

  22. A lot has been written and opined here regarding Steve Jobs and Craig Dubow. I thought this piece in cnet summed it pretty well. Jobs like to make stuff and then profits follow. Dubow wants to make profits and hopes stuff will follow.

  24. Re: 317 p.m. Let's see. Hundreds of thousands without power. Major roads and transportation systems halted. Major flooding up and down the east coast. guess that's worth a brief, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  25. 7:38AM, a brief, sure. You know what we're talking about, the hype, the world's going to end, Bush caused it, the list goes on.

  26. I have a question while we're on hurricane coverage. Why is deaths due to auto accidents (vehicle -vs- vehicle) counted as hurricane deaths?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wow - no AP photos on Lohud cover page today for the first time since Hurricane Irene came. WOO HOO!!! Way to step up guys with actual locally produced photos two days after the hurricane hit!
