What Gannett calls layoffs: 'cost efficiency efforts'

"Pro forma operating expenses, excluding special items, were 18.5% lower due to numerous cost efficiency efforts, facility consolidations and sharply lower newsprint expense."

-- a Gannett statement today, describing the company's financial results for all of last year. GCI's cost-cutting last year included at least 1,400 newspaper layoffs in July.
