  2. This prepress manager likes 2adpro...we have made it work. We send them all the time intensive ads that would kill us.

I would say more positive things but I dont think it would help.

Too many posts here seem to be in the negative, too many people are just happy complaining.

We made it work, if you cant...oh well

  3. And where are you? I'm sure there are people who would be glad to hearthe secret of your success.

  4. We're hearing that the 2 Ad Pro service works really well too. In the UK we were worried that the service would be rubbish but we hear that it works just fine.

  5. How's this - word is that The Des Moines Register will be online only in 5 years. Sounds like this is unlikely, but we already send out Sunday Select to non-subscribers for all the ad inserts free. Online is archived after a week, and anyone that wants to read week old or longer stories must pay $3 a story. Here's a deal, online 1000 stories (average 2 stories for $1) for a year for $2000.) Ready to sign up?

I feel like online the most stupid idea if you think you can charge people when they get it for free. Our Ames paper just went online, and will not be printed. Oh joy! Not that Gannett ever makes any sense.

  6. "We" don't have an Ames paper. "We" in DM do have one of the newest printing plants around, along with one of the highest print penetrations in the country. Now, I suppose 5 years will tell the tale. But this seems like one of those ridiculous comments that gives top execs cover. Oh, and can you please tell us the one about GCI selling Des Moines to Lee (after just making DM a regional site again...).

  7. We DID have an ames paper printed up to last week, but now it is available at http://www.desmoinesregister.com/ames

  8. Back to 2AdPro:
Do customers know the ads are outsourced to India? What do you tell them if/when they ask?

  9. If the author of the first post could please let the rest of us know what they are doing to make 2AdPro work so well for them.

I don't think people just like to complain - we are told to make this work and we are trying. It is very frustrating getting the same ads back improperly done.

Do you have any tips or way we could phrase things to get the results we want? There are other papers that will be using the service soon and maybe we could spare them the trial and error.

online clearly isnt the way to go

google just released their free, open source browser.

infact, someone please name me 1 google product out there that costs any amount of money for someone to use?

i guess they must be doing a lot of pro-bono work over there at google... i mean we all know you can't make money online can you.

    ..... gimme a break.

  11. I will try to do a post on wednesday regarding 2adpro tips

  12. Here's some 2adpro tips - send your text heavy stuff. Car dealers, RE ads (that aren't already on celebro) and anything that is basic.

I was involved in the original assessment of this service at my paper - it was clear that 2adpro can be really helpful with the junk that real designers hate. Text heavy, crammed copy with no thought given to actual appeal.

Now, try to give 2adpro a job that requires actual creative skill - well, that can be a crap shoot.
The folks at 2adpro are just not that familiar with our advertising schtick to do it well - YET. keyword: YET. It's only a matter of time before Todd and his gang have the whole thing running like clockwork.

Honestly, 2adpro offers designer(s) a chance to "direct" creative content. Clear directions and good layouts will produce good results - but this is not true if you do not have the right person, or persons directing the "look". Now I would think any designer would jump at the chance to tell someone how to put an ad together and review the results - all the dirty work gets left for someone else.

Honestly, here's an idea: have the client go directly to the 2adpro site if they need an ad designed and let them deal with India - Gannett should only accept camera ready ads if they really want to cut costs.

Sorry designers, I hate to bring up the proverbial elephant in the room, but it's only a matter of time before the team at 2adpro gets really good - at everything - and the designers will be kicked to the curb. The impresarios at corporate are already taking marketing design down to the nubs with canned assets that are downloaded, heck, they even will customize in some cases for each site - hello - makes it very easy for 2adpro to customize, too, don't you think?

Designers: Wake up. Start looking. Now. Get web savvy and leave this company behind - you are doomed to the fate of the pink slip before long.

  13. Jim, how about a post asking people how much of a pay cut they would consider taking to get out of Gannett? I'm weighing that myself tonight and am wondering what others are doing or would do in order to leap into calmer waters.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
