Reader: Thanks for posting your advice and stories

Regarding advice for newly laid-off Gannett workers, a reader says: "I'd just like to take a moment and say, as one of the hundreds starting this week in fear for their job, thank you very much to everyone who has posted their advice and stories. The thought of no longer having work is frightening, but knowing that so many of you have gone on to successful and happier lives is a comfort."

journalismjobs.com shows new openings at The Clarion-Ledger for
    1. Reporter
    2. Copy editor/page designer.
Neither of the positions is listed on the official Gannett site though.

So, Gannett is eliminating positions and hiring at the same time? Why wouldn't they give priority to the people being laid off?

  2. Well (and this is just my opinion), think of it this way. They can lay off people who make more money in a position they deem less important, then pay young college graduates a great deal less in positions such as reporter and copy editor. I've seen it a million times.

  3. In The Montgomery Advertiser Journal Sunday paper there were 10 positions the paper is hiring for and we are laying off 10 people Wednesday. I guess they think they can get cheaper labor to do the work. Good luck to them with todays up and coming workforce they will be lucky to get 15 hours a week out of these new hires, that is if they stay any length of time.

  4. My father worked in banking for a long time before he jumped ship to work as a broker for Edward Jones (he is a lot happier now).

they did that sort of thing within his company also. They were going around laying off the bank presidents at branches who made the most money and promoting someone up to fill the spot but they didn't pay them nearly as much as what the position was previously compensated.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones.
