Reader seeks GCI document on employee discipline

They're looking for Gannett's personnel policy regarding "corrective, or disciplinary, action of an employee accused of insubordination."

  3. I believe it would vary by site,in the sense that some employees at some papers are covered by the Guild. Each Guild contract would have its own language for what constitutes insubordination, etc.
    But there are overall Gannett policies, too, in the employee handbook issued to all.
    (Sorry, I no longer have mine...)

  5. In right-to-work states, all employment and policies are what the company says they are.
    BTW, when you take a buyout, you can no longer access the Gannett intranet.

  7. Someone please explain to me how the EEOC protects you if you're not a minority. If there's something I don't know, I'd sure love to. My five-year window hasn't closed, for starters.

  8. Get a copy of your local employee manual for disciplinary guidelines. Gannett found out a long time ago that if they didn't provide written guidelines and procedures to their employees they would lose in arbitration, reviews orin court when the employee said... "they didn't tell me any of this". That's why at orientation or upon starting a job you are supposed to get a copy of the employee handbook and sign a form acknowledging that you have received a copy and understand the policies in it. Unlikely the HR departments are doing this but that's what theoretically supposed to be happening.. So have some fun screwing with your HR people and ask them for a copy of the disciplinary procedures included in the employee manual. If you are covered by a CBA the procedures should be in the contract.
