  1. I'm No. 1! Just like New Jersey!

  2. I thought we were dysfunctional in Cherry Hill. You North Jersey papers take the cake. Your toxic buildings and fistfights beat our lazy retail employees and pooping newsroom any day.

    Keep it coming!

  3. I don't know. Cherry Hill has had the newsroom fill with fumes from the sewer line twice in the past two months. Something about some kind of overflow problem somewhere out past the employee parking lot. Those fumes gave me a headache like I've never had before.

  4. Say what you will about Cherry Hill, the newsroom has been a lot calmer since December. I won't say why but nearly everyone knows why. And that's saying a lot given how much we miss - and mourn for - the other people let go, and how much more work we have to do. But there is a crazy factor that is not missed one bit.

  5. 8:20You better find out how they cleared the lines. The right way is to have a professional company come in and do it.In the tough times Gannett does not want to foot thees bills.
You know what, its not Gannett, its the heads of the individual papers that don't get it right!. They are the ones that don't want to draw attention to themselves. They don't want to get under the motherships microscope, for this might effect their pay check,or the bonesis is that Gannett supposedly doesn't hand out.So what this means is,the papers don't even want to report the news anymore.

  6. 8:40 am: How do you make the leap from "heads of individual papers don't want to pay for things like cleaning out sewer lines" to "papers don't want to report the news anymore?" What does one have to do with the other? Do you really think a paper should write about its physical plant? Do you really think backed-up sewer lines constitutes news? Really? Do you think readers care about that? Good thing you're not an assignment editor.

Do us all a favor and take your sweeping generalizations and shove them.

  7. Kinda reminds me of a song momma used to sing!

    Say what you will,
    about Cherry Hill,
    and the things
that you say hear are bad!

    use your tools right,
    print the news,
    at night,
and then things might be so sad,

    So just stop and think,
if you'd plunge out your sink,
    and the vile dangers,
    that come from bellow,

    every one would be safe,
    a wonderful workplace,
    and then your Troubles,
    might not be in tow!!!

Anyway I think that's how it went, might have bin in D

  9. I think things have gotten worse in Cherry Hill since December - there is absolutely no one to go to in management any longer.

  11. "NEW JERSEY PAPERS ROCK"

  12. someone yesterday was talking about an ad guy being indicted for stealing commission.

When will Bob Collins, Katen Ghandi, Mike Lorenca et al be indicted for stealing/EXTORTED hundreds of hours of Unpaid Overtime?

Madoff stays in his apartment; Giethner get to pay taxes late (little $34,000 "oversight"); Dubow gives Scholarships; Neuharth steers millions of Gannett money for his own "Projects"......................................................................The rest of us, unemployeed guy steeling food for his family, homeless tent city residents kicked out of ther humble dwellings, etc......get FU*KED in the ass; without even getting taking to a movie, dinner & drinks and get flowers.

  13. True investigative reporting, would keep things just a little more honest.Don'T you think?,whether its done from the inside out,or the outside in.

  14. Does anyone here in NJ know how taking the voluntary retirement lump sum affects your unemployment??? I just got my paperwork and was considering taking it all now, but since I still haven't found a job and rely on the unemployment, I realllly need some advise. It's not a large amount, but would help in the day to day living expenses - like food, paying the rent, etc. Please help with some advise!

  15. To:9:32 is that you Bob Collins?

    ReplyDelete
  16. 9:32 You know what? Watch what you ask for,you just might get it. What would happen,if you got transferred to the Print Shop copier room, what you asked me to do with my sweeping generalizations might just end up at your feet!THEN WHAT A CHAIN OF EVENTS YOU WOULD SEE !-EG

  17. 12:30, from what I remember the person at UI orientation saying, you would not receive an UI check the week that you received your lump sum payout. You have to call in every 2 weeks and one of the questions is whether you received a pension payout. If you are honest and answer yes than you will forego that UI check (not sure if it's both weeks you lose) Your remaining unemployment will be paid as scheduled.

  18. Anyone hearing the rumor that P.C.F. is going to take over delivery of certain newspapers in New Jersey .Anyone out there know anything about this rumor ?

    ReplyDelete
  19. probably not a rumor. They already deliver DR,CN and HNT.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 12:30 PM.... This is a very difficult question to get answered. HR will never give a straight answer. If you roll over the pension as a bank will instruct you (check is never made out to you, but with the bank as your trustee) you then answer UI's question NO because the money was never yours to spend. NJ HR is known for telling people to see their financial advisor... which actually means "Screw you, we're not going to be the least bit helpful."

  21. It is true that "certain" things are better in the news room at Cherry Hill because of the removal of a certain person . (Respecting Jim's rule he underscored yesterday by not naming names.) But, (and that is underscored) things are not really any better rather are worse. There IS NO ONE worth a damn in so-called management in our building. The ad (classified and retail) depts are a disaster and loaded with a bunch of yes people who are worthless and not productive. As has been said before, no one can understand why this continues. The AD, classified mgr and many of the AD direct reports are a joke, except no one is laughing here any more.

  22. 4:27 , I believe 12:30 was not planning on rolling it over. If you receive a lump sum(as I think he was doing) not only will you be paying taxes on it, but you will lose one week of unemployment, that being the week you receive your check from Gannett. However, as you stated, if you roll it over into an IRA than your Unemployment shouldn't be affected.

  23. "Yes, that is correct, the police were brought in once Paul's "selling tactics" became common knowledge outside of the Courier News. But the Ad Director wrote down his bogus ads when customers disputed their bills numerous times prior to his termination and the PD becoming involved. Paul did not rack up the $70k in one month, he was doing it over a long period of time and many credits were issued while he was still employed and receiving commissions.

The fraud was discovered well before he was fired, it had been going on for many months."

MAYBE SOMEONE SHOULD INVESTIGATE THE AD DIRECTOR!

  24. Where is the Daily Record printed? I ask because I've heard the DR is moving into rented office space ala the Courier News! That can't be true if the paper is printed onsite - can it?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hum that is a good question!

    ReplyDelete
  26. The DR might be printed in Freehold, like the HNT, CN & APP. Anyway the DR is on the ad tracking system that generates in Neptune... just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Cherry Hill is calmer, but editorial is in a weird daze. I feel like the paper has Mr. Burns' syndrome. It has every virus in the world, but they're all stuck at the door, trying to get through simultaneously. The next slight wind could topple the whole newsroom.

It's a false sense of security. I go in and pray today is not the day. Nothing else to do to stop it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maybe Cherry Hill's newsroom is calmer because:

    1. we've given up hope things will improve.
    2. we all expect to be laid off within the year.
    3. we realize there is no point in trying harder, since doing our best isn't enough to bring up the numbers and clearly won't protect our job in the future.
    4. it's getting easier not to care anymore. there just isn't time.

    ReplyDelete
  29. where have you people been?

The DR is printed at AFL in Seacaucus. It has not been printed at the Parsippany plant since May 08, when it was moved to the CN. Over 50 people lost their jobs.
Then a few months later the printing was moved from the CN to Westchester. Over 50 people lost their jobs in Bridgewater when their plant was closed.
The printing has now been moved to AFL.
With the latest move, the Poughkeepsie paper closed their printing plant and laid off over 50people. The Poughkeepsie paper is now printed in Westchester.

You people really don't pay attention to anything outside your cozy little worlds, do you? Great job being "investigative reporters"

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think investigative reporting went extinct when Gannett took over the NJ papers

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
