Honolulu Advertiser staffers authorize strike

The vote doesn't mean a strike is imminent, the Advertiser says, but it does set in motion preparations by the six unions that represent about 600 Advertiser workers for a work stoppage.

Question: When was the last time a Gannett newspaper experienced a strike? Use this link to e-mail feedback, tips, snarky letters, etc. See Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the sidebar, upper right. Or leave a note in the comments section, below.

  1. I suspect that would be the Detroit News. (?)

  2. Yes, the Detroit News was the last Gannett paper to be hit by a strike. There's a cautionary tale in that strike: The unions went out for 17 months and got absolutely nothing in return. The unions ultimately lost their unfair labor practices case and had to come back under Gannett and Knight Ridder's terms. If the unions in Honolulu go out on strike, they sure make SURE they know how to get back into the building. Gannett will be all too happy to keep them out for as long as it takes.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
