Hot Off the Press: The Indianapolis Star

This is today's Indianapolis Star; click on the image for a bigger view. I like the Star's very visual Front Page, especially its treatment of a story that an outsider wouldn't think was big news in Indiana: General Motors' announcement yesterday that it is offering early retirement to thousands of hourly workers.

The paper includes an interesting statistic that drives home the notion that Motown isn't the only place hurt by the shrinking U.S. auto industry amid a rising service economy. "GM now employs fewer than 10,000 Indiana workers, compared with about 40,000 two decades ago,'' the Star says. "Today, the state’s largest employer is Wal-Mart, with about 36,000 workers in the state.''

The Star at a glance:
  • Publisher: Barbara Henry
  • Vice President/Editor: Dennis Ryerson
  • Founded: 1903
  • Joined Gannett: 2000
  • Employees: 1,441
