Reader: Holiday party, no. TV for publisher, yes!

USA Today and the Corporate office are holding a big holiday party tonight at Gannett's fancy Virginia headquarters (above) -- despite widespread layoffs and other job cuts across the company. That doesn't sit well with this Gannett Blog reader, who writes:

"What? The Corporate office in McLean is having a holiday party for its employees? When many of the sites have eliminated them as part of expense controls? One site even stopped giving its annual gift certificates ($30 for part-time employees or full-time less than a year; $60 for full-time) among its cuts. (Of course the publisher is putting new hardwood flooring and a flat-panel TV in his office.)"

Oh, well. Music for tonight's shindig ought to be a snap, since Corporate's been having the band play on all year long anyway, right?

  1. "One site even stopped giving its annual gift certificates"? At least some folks in the empire got those. Worker bees at the home hive don't get anything like that.

BTW, the Scrooge pic was great. Think you can whip up one of McCorkindale as Marley? ;)

  2. Hah! Great idea for Corky! I wish that was an option.

  3. I've worked at three different Gannett papers since 1989, and none have given Christmas bonuses. Some still have Christmas parties, but it's usually organized by the department.
