Westchester | This N.Y. industry *really* steps in it

A reader of The Journal News in Westchester, N.Y., says this hed bust appeared on Page A11 this morning over this story. It was caught at some point, but a lot of editions went out nonetheless, the reader says.

Got an example for my series about the downside of cutting copy editing jobs? Please post your replies in the comments section, below. To e-mail confidentially, write jimhopkins[at]gmail[dot-com]; see Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the rail, upper right.

  3. Army Times referred to West Point as the "U.S. Army Military Academy". The correct name is United States Military Academy. Article in question.

  4. Same as my former Wisconsin site. Mistakes/misspellings so bad that readers even bring it up to me.

  5. mistakes like this have been happening since newspapers were printed - nothing new here....I remember one typesetter who put together a double truck ad for a mall - the key headline across the top was suppose to say "count on us" but the O got dropped. JC Penney dropped an R out of shirts years ago as well.......these people are human and mistakes can happen - this is just an industry where your mistakes are very visable -- what would be worse was the SF TV station that actually put on the screen and read racial slurs regarding the pilot names from the airplane crash in SF a couple of months ago.....

  8. Funny , sad, but so true 8:11; and should be expected with staff cuts of nearly 75% during the last 5 years.

  14. I remember a newspaper in Illinois in the 80s that said a “shitload of snow” in a caption about a winter storm. Another newspaper, also in the 80s, (a magical time) headlined picture from a gun show “implements of death.” Mistakes like this have been haunting newspapers forever. What makes them more common now is 1) all the copyeditors have been laid off (okay, I know not ALL copyeditors have been laid off, but many have been) so more mistakes never get caught and do make it into print and 2) social media makes sharing and laughing about them so much easier. It used to be just industry insiders saw our mistakes through places like the CJR’s “Lower Case.” Now everyone sees them on FB.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
