  1. 7:54, one thing's for sure: GCI certainly isn't hiring talented, older, experienced people!

  2. Hey Let the layoffs begin.
There will then be a huge wind of relief from this blog.
There will so much stress relief at one time it will cause a huge vaccuum!
Then people can get on with their lives and be happy again.
For some Gannett employees that I know, getting their ass booted out the door is the only way they would ever leave the precious Gannett kingdom. After all it is the only job they could ever have.
Anyone else know someone of this mind set?

  3. 9:15, you've got to come up with some new material. At least learn how to type so your comments don't give you away each time.

  4. 10:07 - he doesn't have time for it,he's running a publishing
    empire with six
figures in the bank. It's a great new place, but he has to
come back and let people know how wonderful life is outside of Gannett. You just need a better mind set to understand.

  5. Another editor leaving the sinking ship that is the Daily Record ... run, don't walk, to the lifeboats.

  6. 9:15 is right on target - the precious, cemented fixtures working on the corporate Gannett side of Tysons are going nowhere unless they get the boot, plus they have the attitude that they're safe and untouchable.

  7. 10:52 - As I said, you need to get new material.

  8. Sorry if already posted: Layoffs at Knoxville News-Sentinel. http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2011/dec/06/news-sentinel-announces-reduction-in-staff/

  9. Please add a producton/operation thread... The press op thread was very informative.

  10. Telling sign when Gannett Blog operated by one person on a shoe-string budget shows up higher in Google search box than Gannett itself - by comparison a multi-billion dollar media company's own corporate website. Try it yourself and see.

  11. Not on mine 7:45. Of course maybe you Googled Gannett Blog!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I've never Googled Gannett and found Gannett Blog ranked the No. 1 search result, ahead of the company's homepage. Still, I always find this site on the first page of results.

  13. Seems 7:59 is in a bit of denial to the larger point as typing in just Gannett into the following search engines resulted in Gannettblog's appearance in the autofill field everytime* before hitting Enter. Clicking on that resulted in the following rankings for it:

    Google: 3rd
    Bing: 2nd
    Ask.com: 5th
Yahoo: 2nd; first above Gannett as an also try.
    Dogpile: 11th.
*DuckDuckgo: No autofill, but 8th in rank upon search of this relatively new search engine.

  14. 7:45. this is what you get when you hire a chief marketing officer who spends more time hiring her own friends and doing trade media interviews instead of her job. Gannett continues to be a two bit player in building an effective management team.

Most of us are accountable for our work. But something unexplainable happens when you become a Gannett executive. You get a magical title but you do little to nothing to advance the company's growth. And nobody seems to care.

  15. Wouldnt it make sense that Gannett blog would come up first, based on traffic volume? I mean who calls up Gannett? No reason to.

  16. 8:40 Jib applicants and investors.

  17. Am I the only one who is numb to this talk about layoffs? The first few times the announcements came on this blog I was up in arms and worried. Not any more.
If it happens, then it happens, and there isn't a damn thing I can do about it. I still try to do the best I can, with much less I might add, but you can't fit 10 gals. of water in a 5 gal. bucket.
    Good luck to all...

    BTW. Brevard

  18. 9:15 and 10:52, get some new material. You post the same stuff, the same way, every day. It's incredibly obvious.

  19. Yes it's the main Google search box auto-fill feature that automatically fills in the word "blog" after you type in the just the word "Gannett." Those who understand search know this means Google gets more people who type in "Gannett Blog" than simply the word "Gannett," thus Google places that as the first auto fill selection atop the auto-fill listings based on volume of what's input. My guess is that the entry posted here by 8:21 p.m. could be a nervous GCI corporate marketing or advertising staffer making a mighty six figure salary based on some smoke and mirrors as credentials, embarassed this finding was posted here. Might also be interesting to compare Gannett.com traffic compared to Gannett blog traffic on Alexa.com or other site measures.

  20. Hey kids - I'm 10:52 and I just made it up to be a smartass - if you actually read what I typed I was agreeing with 10:07's assessment of 9:15's daily pithy insulting comment, complete with weird spacing and oddball line breaks.

    It's not hard,if
you just forget everything you ever knewed about
typing, and stuff. All in the mind set.

    :) Peace!

  21. Sorry, dreamers, but Gannett Blog does not come up ahead of the Gannett site in searches.

I am always amazed at the lengths people here will go to for their Jim-worship. My favorite recent example came when Jim basically admitted his Web search pattern brings up racy ads in this window, but he was too naive to grasp this. No one else here chose to call him out.

  22. I suspect that the Google autofill results are more complex than just "what's popular." After the blog and the generic Gannett, my results included Gannett + my city, Gannett benefits, and Gannett webmail. I doubt that webmail would show up for most people, but does for me because I actually visit that address on this computer.

  23. 10:27 is mistaken.

I know Google's AdSense program tailors ads appearing here to the demographics of individual readers.

My post said that many of my readers don't know that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I've re-read 7:45's comment, and now see they were referring to the auto-fill feature in the Google search box -- not to the search results that follow.

  26. What happened to the Publisher in Shreveport? Careerbuilder has the position of Publisher and President for Shreveport posted. Just curious

  27. Really? A 7:30 p.m. Saturday night deadline for The Fond du Lac Reporter? Oh, do tell why.

  28. 10:07 and 10:52
You really need to get a life!

  29. Jim, many of the ads here are contextual. Meaning ads are served based on topics and search words that appear on the blog. Also ads are retargeted, meaning if you visited a website recently, google will stalk you around the web and serve you ads for that website.

    ReplyDelete
  30. First, second, third, who cares! The fact that the blog comes-in so close to the top in search engines should tell us all we need to know about the impact this blog has.

  31. The Wisconsin sites switched to the Facebook story chat feature last night, and I see several hot button issues that have no comments. Those used to be the best thing to read on the sites.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Same thing at Florida Today. Commenting switch to facebook system resulted in a grand total of 5 comments for the ENTIRE DAY on Tuesday. Yep, a real traffic booster, NOT!!!

  33. Try this out: don't type Gannett fully. Just type GAN and see what pops up for you. Gannett Blog is the fourth suggestion but Gannett itself doesn't pop up until you type another N.

YMMV since I don't completely understand Google and its algorithms.

  34. Clark Howard on msnbc just did a piece about a Facebook senior scam, targeting people's grandparents to send them money. He gave tips to avoid trouble, but he also said the scam is proliferating like crazy.

  35. Romenesko just posted a remembrance of the Blue Ball Three. Management then was as mean-spirited then as now:

  38. A colleague posted on FB about deciding when to take their furlough. I've already been told I won't be getting one. Must be nice to make the big bucks ...

    ReplyDelete
  39. I've heard that people making under $14/hr. won't get furloughed. I'm much above that but I'm glad they don't need to - life is hard enough. Whoever made that call - thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Crap, meant NOT much above that. Didn't mean to sound like a putz.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Cant wait for my annual furlough trip ti Florida. I enjoy the first quarter furlough, give's me a chance to get away from the snow and cold..thank you GPS for an extra week off. My unemployment will cover the air fare

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm with you 3:50 and will take it further. Hoping for a Q2 furlough too so I can back it up to the last week of March and take 2 weeks in a row. Heck, I may even add a week's vacation and make it a 3 week vacation-all for about a $200 pay cut after unemployment. Losing the stress is worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The point of all the talk about Gannett Blog's rank on Google has to do with traffic: That the blog gets more traffic than the Gannett homepage (which is kind of a no-brainer assessment anyway).

    Sheesh

Pete Zanmiller was promoted (I think it was a promotion) to South Regional Group vice president as part of the recently created Gannett Publishing Services Group.

The Times' executive editor, Africa Price, is serving as interim publisher, according to the paper's online contact list.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
