Advertising | What banner ad do you see now?

Some of you may not know that advertisements served by Google's AdSense program to Gannett Blog are targeted toward individual reader demographics, as well as the content they're seeing. That's a reflection of how finely-tuned advertising has become across the Internet.

For example, I've recently been seeing display ads at the top of this site for Atlantis, a Los Angeles company that charters cruises for gay tourists. (Screen shot, below.)

What ad are you seeing in the top banner position right now?

  3. "Sync Coffee" was the top banner. (Note: I'm not a coffee drinker)

Then, when I clicked to read the responses under this topic, the banner changed to "JCPenny".

I clicked back to the Home Page and was met with
an advertisement for "David Yurman" Jewelry

  5. I block your ads successfully, Jim. And I never donate. In addition, I take pride in knowing you've probably spent money to maintain the delusion that my group doesn't control your site.

  8. Outback gift cards. Hmm. Google either thinks I'm hungry or that my friends are. I'd prefer the cruise (even though I'm straight) : )

  10. Somethin' for green printing. The irony is, when I still had a career, I would pay attention to them, their demographics. Now, still targeted, I have no disposable income (so far, that is), so the targeting is interesting but a huge waste.
