New: Anonymous comments allowed again

[7:56 a.m., Ibiza time: Now setting up for a big show]

I'm making that switch after an experiment with requiring registration, but for a limited time only -- because of special circumstances.

  1. Jim,
Not sure the readers -- and posters -- will return. Most of us viewed the banning of anonymous comments as a cut to a lifeline ... as pathetic as that sounds.

  2. It's going to be hard to get people back here. Maybe if there are layoffs people will come back just to see if there is any news on here, and then maybe they will comment like they use to. But my gut feeling is that you lost three-quarters of your audience and most aren't going to spend the time they once did commenting on a blog that has all but been declared dead. In some cases, that's a good thing. Way too many morons were on here. But others did make insightful remarks that really made me think a lot about this company that I work for -- particularly how the last round of layoffs proved Gannett is a heartless and mismanaged company. There was no oversight/checks and balances to the layoffs and many careers and lives were ruined by a company that showed zero loyalty to longtime, productive employees. A company that took the word of incompetent managers, with their own personal agendas, in determining who was going to be let go. I sure hope we aren't in for another round of personal vendettas/layoffs. I hope this blog can quickly rebuild itself into a viable source of info for us all. But I think we're basically on our own to seek out info and interpret it around the water coolers rather than this blog.

  3. You may have misunderstood my post. This is not an attempt to recover any lost readers. I made the switch back to anonymous commenting to deal with a possible change in top management, and with an expected big layoff between now and early July.

On or near Friday, July 10, I'll post a traffic redirect to Gannettoid -- my farewell post. I'll then freeze this blog for good. Then I'll focus full-time on fundraising for IRE, and on launching Ibiza Confidential.

  4. Why would you think Dubow's surgery would lead to a change in management? Just doesn't strike me as a logical thought process.

I'm sure there are mechanisms in place for times when personal matters would take a chief executive away for a protracted period. I'll put my money on Gracia being elevated during his absence to handle the ceo-type duties.

  5. Dubow's done a horrible job leading this company and there's no better excuse to mask his departure for it than to blame it on personal "health" reasons.

  6. Just shut this blog down now. This is really becoming sad.

  7. It was great while it lasted and I will always appreciate what it gave me in terms of understanding Gannett's MO, i.e., no one gets 4s or 5s on reviews; you are doing what you are assigned because Gannett said so, even if it is irrelevant to your beat; ads are the same as content to readers; reporters don't bring in revenue and so are mainly a drain on the system.
Excuse me, but for reporters there would be no news, as in a NEWSPAPER?
Hello folks. And goodbye. Verification "surearl"

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
