Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Ibiza Confidential is my first effort at a blog as a business start-up. The site is locked down right now; I expect to launch it by about July 1.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I haven't written about this blog before now, I've been publishing it for two years, mostly for several dozen family and friends.
I decided it had commercial potential last summer, when it attracted a small group of readers without my promoting it one bit. The proprietor of a website called iPhone Ibiza found it, passed the link to friends, and away it went.
I retired Ibiza Confidential temporarily after the summer ended. But it hasn't been far from my mind.
This summer, the concept is more focused on revenue; I plan to run advertising at least, although I can imagine some sponsorship opportunities. More on that later. Write if you have specific questions.
Good luck with it.
ReplyDeleteGood layout. Watch the reverses on black, sometimes it's difficult to read. Best of luck. I will email you privately and give you some advertising advice.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm too hetero. I thought this was a hoax.
ReplyDeleteYou're saying this website is/will be real?
I've tolerated the constant pledge breaks/pleas for money, the wacky rants about being targeted/persecuted/undermined, your detours into your personal life (this is the Gannett Blog not the Jim Blog) because every now and then you post something relevant to Gannett employees/stockholders.
ReplyDeleteBut if this new blog is indeed real, your promotion of it in this venue is the last straw. Unprofessional to the max. And, no, not because it may be gay. But because I find the promotion of any new site unrelated to the topic of this blog as an all-time low. A bait-and-switch. Oh, you came here to read about Gannett but let me tell you about this instead.
I'll check back to see how you answer 9:43's question and if it's not a hoax, I won't be coming back. I don't visit this site to read about anything other than Gannett.
Oy vey.
ReplyDeleteMore proof this blog is DEAD!!!
ReplyDeleteJumped the SHARK!!!
Geez. Jim seems very likable and I've enjoyed this blog for the past year or so. But, sadly, I think it's over. (I don't work for Gannett and never have.)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lois Lane.
ReplyDeleteI certainly wouldn't go to ANY site that had something on it unrelated to the site that was only there to garner attention.
Any kind of . . . I guess you'd call it an advertisement . . . offends me to no end. I'm sure there are plenty of other sites out there with nothing like that.
(sheesh)
way off topic. please dont
ReplyDeletecross promote.
i like the gannett blog!
Jim, this is why Disney made Touchstone, dude. The overlap between the two audiences is pretty small. . . Good luck with your new project, but I really don't want to see it around here. That's not anti-gay --I don't want to see oiled up pictures of bikini babes here either.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, one of the purposes of this new blog is to focus my non-Gannett reporting away from Gannett Blog.
ReplyDeleteLast summer, I often posted about Ibiza on this blog; with Ibiza Confidential, that won't happen at all.
Jim: I found last summer's posts distracting but tolerated them because they came at a time when all hell was breaking loose in Gannett. But I could care less about an Ibiza blog. As I've already said, not what I come here to read.
ReplyDeleteSo, bottom line: will you keep promoting the new blog here? A simple yes or no, please. If yes, I am gone - with regret but still gone.
Three words about the cover image: Cuidado, mucho caliente!
ReplyDeleteNow, if you wanted to have some sister sites that covered Hearst, McClatchy, etc and were closely linked to this site with easy navigation between them. . .that'd be cool.
ReplyDeleteYOU THINK WE MAY HAVE LOST OUR WAY. GO MISS CALIFORNIA JIM YOU HAVE DONE A GOOD JOB THUS FAR ON GANNETT.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand what the big freakin deal is people. Jim is just telling us what else he is doing to try to earn moeny. We read about all of these corporate pigs on this blog and we read stupid comments from abusive posters and I think it's nice to sometimes see a hot guy with a dark tan in a speedo. It lightens things up a bit. What is with the recent streak of "militancy" that has struck posters? Then when Jim does focus intently on the blog, you all bitch again that he's making things personal. If all of these posts are representative of Gannett employees, then it is very telling why the company is in its present condition. Geesh.
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty obvious to most -- especially those on the outside -- that this company is headed to disaster. It's off course and the ice berg is dead ahead. I think the ice berg is that HUGE debt payment that needs to be repaid next year. IMO.
By far, the most disappointing post you've written. And I say that as a gay man myself.
ReplyDeleteJim, have you ever written that this blog would only have content directly related to Gannett?
ReplyDeleteIt's your blog; post what you want to post.
I, for one, enjoy reading that people have lives outside of Gannett.
You've spent so much time bashing things like Metromix party pics on this site, and now you're showing this off like it's something to be proud of... Such a hypocrite.
ReplyDeleteAll: Please read 1:22 pm; the author understands my goal here.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first of only two times I'm planning to promote Ibiza Confidential on Gannett Blog. The second time will be when it launches.
I may add a link to my short blogroll. But except for breaking news that demands a reference, I'll probably never mention this new site again.
Good luck with the new site. Did you ever think that you and Disney would be mentioned in the same sentence?
ReplyDeleteWow, some of you need to settle down. Pectoral phobia, is that what it is?
ReplyDeleteAs a Tolerant Heterosexual, I have this to say:
What I see is proof of life after Gannett. Jim is proving that if you work hard, you can do something else with your life. Some of you have a problem with that?
So you like to fish? Start a fishing blog. Like to Fly kites? Some of you should really go do that.
I think it has EVERYTHING to do with the state of journalism, and that you can move on to do other things. That is, unless you are talentless hacks. Which are still numerous, for some reason. Then, I suppose it's welfare and unemployment.
HOLD ON! Jim's blog on Ibiza is NOT the entire content you receive at this multi-topic site. Jim has a perfect right to do it. It's like the idiots who complain about television programs when they can turn the channel! Here, just bypass anything that holds no interest for you. I regularly do that with the Elmira Confidential. Is it any big deal? Duh....NO!
ReplyDeleteI don't work for Gannett anymore, but I check in here every once in a while, and I've got 2 cents on this one.
ReplyDeleteJim, have you considered that the reason people might respond poorly to a mention of your new site in this forum is because of the tone paradox? Namely, Gannett Blog has set itself up as a chronicle of the pain and hard times many people are dealing with in their current job situations -- while your new site seems to be a sun-soaked, ab-decked ode to a boozy life in a fabulous locale?
That's a weird, weird contrast, my friend. People enduring rounds of layoffs aren't likely to appreciate commentary on the good life -- no matter how infrequently it's mentioned.
As a straight (but not narrow) female, I can appreciate the best of the best of the human male form, regardless of the particular photo subject's sexual orientation.
ReplyDelete(Yeah...eye candy is eye candy.)
I was a September firee. Have yet to find other employment, and I'm not one bit put off by seeing what Jim's other professional ventures are, even if it IS a resort of decadant party life. Even a firee needs to remember that getting out and enjoying oneself on ocasion is what makes life turely worthwhile.
To those who are attempting to tell Jim what he should and shouldn't do with the Blog that HE had the guts to create and keep going daily remember this...
Jim was one of our co-workers not that long ago. JIM had the guts to start this blog. Don't like what he puts up? Don't come.
The tired..."I don't like what you've done to your sandbox, so I won't ome and play anymore." Gimme a break...
I say GOOD. Don't come. It's Jim's sandbox.

ReplyDeleteMarketers take note:
ReplyDeleteI'm chasing an affluent and growing consumer demographic, one my friend David calls, Circuit Daddies. These are gay men in their mid-40s and up, many living in London, Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, San Francisco -- Palm Springs, Calif.!. They're financially independent or self-employed, and lead active, adventurous lives on the international gay party circuit.
Imagine the Robb Report, Conde Nast Traveler, Blue, Sunday New York Times Travel section, etc., but rolled up with an urban gay male sensibility.
I fancy myself as a George Costanza type, full of rage and refusing to budge from the floor's exotic bathroom and dishwasher filled pantry.
ReplyDeleteI applaud Jim's new venture and wish him well, but I don't want to come here and be inundated with Ibiza content. If he's just informing folks about it to see if there are people here interested, that's OK with me.
ReplyDeleteI mean, I have two Facebook profiles. One to play, one to network.
However, I think if he wants to be taken seriously here, he shouldn't mix the two too much.

ReplyDeleteI say GOOD. Don't come. It's Jim's sandbox."
When you ask people who regularly come to your sandbox to donate money, it shouldn't be shocking that those people begin to have certain expectations of the sandbox.
It's nothing personal against Jim. And he does seem to be dialing back a bit on the new blog stuff, perhaps based on some of the reaction he's gotten here.
do we get the password to check out the site?
ReplyDeleteJim has frequently posted items reminding people that the blog is for discussion about Gannett, and to please not post unrelated material.
ReplyDeleteBut it's OK for Jim to post items unrelated to Gannett.
H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E!
5:30 PM said: When you ask people who regularly come to your sandbox to donate money, it shouldn't be shocking that those people begin to have certain expectations of the sandbox.
ReplyDeleteLet me see...I go to a website that is asking for donations to help a family pay for the medical care of a terminally ill child. So because I shoot them a Frankin, I have the the right to ask them to keep "certain' information off the site? I have the RIGHT to EXPECT that they are going to run the site MY way? I think not.
I personally don't want to see photos of the hospital room plastered with flowers and baloons.
Who's site is it? If I don't want to donatate am I forced to? If I don't like what I find there...am I forced to return?
No one who donates to Jim has any inherant right to expect anything more than what Jim deems appropriate. You are not forced to donate, nor are you forced to return if you don't care for the content.
Good luck to you Jim! I hope the new blog is a success and brings you some lightness and fun to balance the heaviness of the gannettblog. All the best!
ReplyDeleteJim has the balls to complain about the momlikeme MILF content while he is busy posting pictures of homo's wearing banana hammock speedo's with their dicks practically hanging out!
ReplyDeleteJim,
You have not only fucked up and disgraced yourself at the shareholders meeting, but now you are falling off the deep end with the Gannett conspiracy shit and this homo fag Ibiza crap.
I want my $80 dollars back that I sent your KY jellied ass!
Jim,
ReplyDeleteTara and the rest of the management team were heard taking bets to see if you are you a top or a bottom?
This is good! Like the stages of grieving, you are now moving on from Gannett. I understand entirely, you don't put your heart and soul into something for that many years and not feel hurt and pain when it's suddenly over. Good for you! I wish I could do the same! Jim, you are an inspiration.
ReplyDelete"Like the stages of grieving, you are now moving on from Gannett."
ReplyDeleteIt's more like the stages of insanity.
One of the best parts of this blog these days is watching Jim descend deeper into the realm of the lunatics.
In 12-18 months, Jim is going to be in a basement somewhere with a bunch of snakes. (Not a homophobic comment.)
God knows! Only the dead and dying here!
ReplyDeleteJim:
ReplyDeleteOne of only two times, huh? Yet today is filled with Ibiza. Go for it.
But I for one have to say goodbye. I'll be traveling down some other yellow brick road and maybe next time, I won't find someone manipulating me behind the curtain for his own commercial end.
I wonder if this is what you had in mind all along? Create a blog about one corporation, build an audience for it, then turn around and start shilling for a a web site whose content is wholly unrelated. Great marketing strategy.
But it smacks of the disloyalty that you have railed on about within Gannett. Then again, maybe that's what you learned working for GCI.
Farewell.
Promoting Ibiza Confidential does seem counter-intuitive to what you're trying to do with Gannett blog, Jim. Certainly, its a better step than continuing on the unsubstantiated corporate witch hunt against you, $2,000 a day bodyguards, rants vs. The Man and hourly countdowns waiting for corporate to respond to your Symbionese Liberation Army like demands. But I do fear you are alienating your audience again. Almost intentionally. And you had been so close to getting back on track, kimosabe.
