Reviews | You say that like it's a bad thing!

'A sun-soaked, ab-decked ode to a
boozy life in a fabulous locale'

-- Anonymous@3:16 p.m., commenting on my new, still-under-development Ibiza Confidential blog, which I disclosed today. It's locked down now; I hope to launch by July 1.

  1. As the guy who wrote that, let me clarify: It ain't a bad thing. But if you put it in the context of the rest of the blog, it's a little jarring. And maybe has a whiff of a lack of empathy (or solidarity) to it. Only because people worrying about losing their jobs probably have a different set of priorities than those wandering the beach in one of the most notoriously glamorous and upscale recreation spots in the world.

Taken on its own, though, I got zero problem with it.

  2. P.S. But don't take that as a lecture. It's just an observation. This is obviously your platform. Do with it whatever you want, with my best wishes.

Well folks, it is official. Jim has nothing to report about Gannett anymore since he lost ALL his loyal "tipsters".

Why did he lose them so rapidly? Here is a complete list:

    1. Jim screwed up the shareholder meeting by acting like a bitter, fired employee.
    2. Jim is paranoid and thinks people are after him. (Hey Jimbo, a little advice, many public figures and executives get threats daily, but theu don't all hire a mall cop to protect them).
    3. Jim is filling his editorial void with crap from last years vacation. Glad you went to Ibiza, I am just looking to find a way to pay my wife's dental bills.
    4. Jim is losing the battle with Corporate and his blog has tacitly endorsed this management teams steady hand.

    Jim,
I dontated to GannettBlog several times, but now I barely come back. Thank you for your prior work. I think you can now exit from GannettBlog gracefully.

    Good luck with Ibiza Confidential.

I've determined what Jim is up to.

    Look at the evidence:

    • If you'll notice, Jim has not posted any news about Gannett since the bogus press closings stories from several days ago.
    • The must outlandish writing ever was done before, during and after the shareholder’s meeting
    • His entire revenue stream was spent around the shareholder’s meeting for travel and "security"
    • His entire focus for the past few days has been on repeated, self-serving advertorials for his new site
    • He has a “gay-meter” survey on the side bar of the GANNETT blog

And now for the real truth behind Jim’s antics leading up to and at the shareholder’s meeting: the whole thing was a calculated stunt, laying the groundwork for Jim to promote his new blog. How else could you explain the vaudevillian nature of his performance at the meeting? All the drama leading up to the meeting with outlandish fees supposedly paid for a "protection" service. How else can you explain all the homophobic comments that were probably planted by Jim and staff to create a build up for what you are now seeing? It’s all called marketing. This was a well thought out campaign finally unveiled this week.

Yes folks, Jim isn’t making money with the Gannett blog so he is finally being forced to move on. The sugar daddy train is leaving the station. The reality of life is beginning to take hold. He is hoping enough gay employees from a media company’s editorial departments (let’s face it, most of the blog contributors are from the editorial departments) will become angry and insulted enough to help his new venture become a success, perhaps with a few even becoming stringers.

I’ll be surprised to see much of anything original from Jim about Gannett over the coming days and nearly everything to promote this new venture. Nicely played, Jim! I wish you much luck in your new venture.

"Like the stages of grieving, you are now moving on from Gannett."

It's more like the stages of insanity.

One of the best parts of this blog these days is watching Jim descend deeper into the realm of the lunatics.

In 12-18 months, Jim is going to be in a basement somewhere with a bunch of snakes. (Not a homophobic comment.)

    Jim:
One of only two times, huh? Yet today is filled with Ibiza. Go for it.

But I for one have to say goodbye. I'll be traveling down some other yellow brick road and maybe next time, I won't find someone manipulating me behind the curtain for his own commercial end.

I wonder if this is what you had in mind all along? Create a blog about one corporation, build an audience for it, then turn around and start shilling for a a web site whose content is wholly unrelated. Great marketing strategy.

But it smacks of the disloyalty that you have railed on about within Gannett. Then again, maybe that's what you learned working for GCI.

    Farewell.

Promoting Ibiza Confidential does seem counter-intuitive to what you're trying to do with Gannett blog, Jim. Certainly, its a better step than continuing on the unsubstantiated corporate witch hunt against you, $2,000 a day bodyguards, rants vs. The Man and hourly countdowns waiting for corporate to respond to your Symbionese Liberation Army like demands. But I do fear you are alienating your audience again. Almost intentionally. And you had been so close to getting back on track, kimosabe.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
