Approximately 100 directors in September. And the first big one: 1,000, last August. Overall, Gannett employs 41,500 worldwide. (Employment by division.)

Now, from Alexandria, La., to Wilmington, Del., we say goodbye to more co-workers. Including 10 of 85 U.S. dailies, GCI subsidiaries have now eliminated at least 310 jobs in this round, which began near the end of the first quarter, at the St. Cloud Times.

The News-Press in Fort Myers is quietly laying off support staff this week. I would guess a minimum of half a dozen

8 in the call center at the Indianapolis Star. Some of those folks collected ads, but with ad sales down, time to lay off.
If Gannett needs to find money to save to keep going, there is plenty of opportunity at the courier post as 5:18 PM suggests. I could blog a list of names but Jim would probably delete the post or just not allow it to appear. Most of the "opportunity" is outside of the news room and everyone knows it.

Planet Discover was 9/55 = approximately a 16% cut.
Yes, positively it has to do with Pub meeting last week. They came back with marching orders, all the way to 1,023 they need to hit.
Tucson's so screwed that they're having to hire back some staffers. Can barely get the paper out.
Ok, Kool Aid drinking gannett employees — what do you have to say now? The scary thing is that you think your job is safe. I feel bad for you when reality finally sets in.
I wish no one to lose their job but you need to take a hard look at reality and realize it's time to get your resume ready or take on another job to supplement your unemployment. You can make a limited amount a week without it being deducted from your unemployment check. I found with my additional job I can make the same or more than I'm making now. It's not a dream job but it will make ends meet. We ALL need to do this now before we are the next one to go.
Jim, the official number for Reno is 33, according to publisher and HR guy.
In Ithaca 6 people in ad services were let go because of the consolidation. There was also a guy in circulation who was let go. Both happened in March.

We all know the VP's are in McLean this past week. The marching orders are more mgrs and dept heads will be bitting the dust. Publishers are to see which ones they can do without since many will be off 2 weeks this qtr.
Several Editors in Morristown were told yesterday they'e out on May 1 due to regional hub at APP. Think it might have been as many as 10.
Morristown - better add 4 more to that total.
Total Count should be 7 and probably counting.

So basically Poughkeepsie will lose positions to the Westchester hub, that seems unfair. Once again The Journal News of Westchester was shutout from Best of Gannett Awards, Gold Rings, etc ... Poughkeepsie picked up a Best of Gannett Award last week. Why does the great PoJo staff have to suffer to the hands of that Hell Hole in Westchester?

Gannett is demanding that Presidential Ring winners still with the company return their rings so that the gold can be melted, sold for $900/oz and the money returned to corporate to pay for the 2010 golf outing in New Zealand. Those no longer with the company have been asked to return the rings voluntarily or else their lifetime health benefits and consulting contracts will be terminated.
Towards the end of March, all 11 NBC affiliates had a portion of their engineering centralized to Jacksonville, FL. Where before there was often two broadcast engineers per shift at these stations (one doing air, and the other doing satellite and remote feeds), there is now only 1 or none. The one I'm familiar with, they lost five engineers (so multiply that by 11 stations).
I hear Barry Rothfeld will soon be named Publisher at Westchester - all is not lost.

Why don't you do some real reporting and put these layoffs in context? Do some comparisons with other companies. You could do media companies, auto companies and then pick 3-4 different industries yourself.
These numbers are meaningless without context. Kind of like taking a photo of someone with honthing to give the photo perspective.

Hi I heard the other day they are now done with furlows. Thank GOD BUT are back to layoffs. Looks like they liked the stock pop and are cutting as much as they can and think about it later mentality.
