Bait to switch: Insurer dangles iPod to win business

As employees consider medical coverage choices during the annual open enrollment period, UnitedHealthcare’s Consumer Driven Health Plan is trying to tempt you with a chance to win an iPod nano. "Watch an important CDHP video from UnitedHealthcare to be eligible to win an Apple 8GB iPod® nano,'' says an e-mail posted by a reader. "Two people will win a nano every business day from Monday, Nov. 3, to Friday, Nov. 21, 2008.''

  1. So what is the big deal? Watching the video commits you to nothing. Just seems like a harmless marketing effort to get folks to understand the new Gannett plan. Put away your tin foil hat.

  4. Need to know if information about next year's health benefits has been emailed to employees. I was bought out and wonder if information was sent to my disconnected Gannett computer.

  7. They're literally allowing employees to be induced over life and death matters for some small *chance* to win a $149 produce? wtf.

    That's sickening; Gannett should just not allow this, but those colors show through, I guess.

  8. no, what they're doing is MARKETING to a niche group of employees. Just what we all do every day at a Newspaper. The plan above is made for younger, healthier single folks that don't have families and don't need the big expensive insurance plans. If the "Chance" to win an IPOD makes you pick the wrong healthcare choice then you've got more wrong with you than a tummy ache.

    Seems to me they're bring to the attention of people who might be interested in an iPod that there are other choices out there.

    I've been on the Aetna Health Fund for the past two years and LOVE it. Cheaper premiums than the bigger plans and for the past 2 years I haven't paid one cent out of pocket (not even a co-pay).

  10. i had to settle for aetna when my hmo dropped everyone but medicare/medicaid patients. now i'm not being offered aetna for next year.

  11. I agree with the first poster: what's the big deal?? You guys whine about EVERYthing.

    We're all in the marketing business. All this promotion does is give you a little incentive to watch a pitch.

    I've had the coverage for several years and I'm not a young person but it works quite well for me.

    Gee whiz - find somethig real to gripe about. I can't believe this was even a blog item!!!!

  12. The cash savings alone should encourage the company to give an iPod to EVERY person who switches from a traditional plan.

    And not just a Nano. A full size Ipod isn't that much more.

  14. Actually, I think the overall cost to the company is ultimately the same on the health fund and PPO, just different ways of paying. In the end to the company it's about the same according to the calculators

  15. Should we even bother enrolling this year, concerning we might not be here in a few short weeks? Also, knowning my luck, somewhere it will state to win the iPod, "Must be present (employed) to win"
