  3. Corporate has been here in town the past few days. We have a mandatory meeting this morning with the acting circ director (Rick Bell). The home delivery manager was not invited, only DMs. Should be interesting to see what corporate is going to drop on us next. Last year it was out sourcing customer service. Last week it was laying off our circulation director. Who knows they might out source home delivery. We'll see...

  4. Corporate has been "here" --- where the hell are you? Who, What, When, WHERE, How and Why, remember?

  5. With the small amount of staff that we have anymore. I would prefer not to disclose where exactly "here" is.

  8. Replying to 10:54 on 9/24: "Anyone who has anything concrete about layoffs or wage freezes or pay cuts should pony up to Jim and let him investigate its "truthiness.'' All of us need to know, and some of us might have lower-paying offers on the table that we would take faster if we knew our days are numbered. I know, I know, I'm the King of the Idiots if I don't see my days are numbered, but if there is GOOD news out there somewhere maybe some of us will still be here in a year. Or not. In any case, we have lives to lead, kids to feed, houses to not lose, ulcers to prevent ..."

I agree. I am one with an offer!

  9. Has anyone else ever felt there was anything odd about the Madelyn P. Jennings Scholarship that Gannett Foundation supposedly gives out?

I tried to google past winners and can't find a list of them. I'm at a large paper, so you would think our HR might alert us that it has an unusual deadline of February a full YEAR before the spring the scholarship is given. The kid has to apply in the middle of their junior year only if they've taken a PSAT, not SAT. Not every kid takes a PSAT.

I think our executive editor's kid won it one year, so I think it is given, but where does the Foundation publish the list of winners?

HR's database could sort for employees with 15 year olds and send a letter or email to alert them at the beginning of the kids' high school junior year. It almost seems like its obscurity and prohibitive deadlines ensure an exclusive set of candidates.

And why only one measly $3,000 one-time award from a company this size? The average shareholder may have shook more than that out of the Gannett tree this year.

  13. Still nothing to report in Nashville. Where is that big event?

  14. No Gasoline in Western North Caorlina at all. City closing offices and Schools are closing.

    No gas in Asheville means:

    No Gas
    No Travel
    No Sales
    No Revenue
    No Advertising Director Bonus
More news room staff lay offs
    Repeat.

  15. Yesterday, someone responded to my comment that print will never go out of style with the following..

    12:33

Do you work for a paper. You seem to be pretty innovative and in the know. You obviously like reading day old news and such.

    9/24/2008 6:46 PM

    To respond.....
Yes I do work for a newspaper, my hometown gannett paper. I still get more local news from the paper than any other source.

One thing I have noticed on this blog is the lovely way gannett employees treat and respond to other gannett employees.

So let me respond the this person in kind...and in the true spirit of so many here....

If the fact that I like the paper irritates you then you can shove it up your a$$

    ReplyDelete
  16. Had to chuckle about the day old news comments. If you wrote that, you need something better than just the word "innovation" to back up your point. Please do a quick survey of the Gannett sites, and tell me how much of the news and supposed news updates are really fresh and new stuff. At least with a print product, the user can decide when to toss content. Nothing dissapoints me more than to see the same- old- same- old pop up day after on news sites. I say refer it. Archive it. Do anything but pass it off as fresh news.

  17. I find it so sad and strange that there is so much contempt for the print product from within. Sometimes I think that comes from fear, not innovative thinking. I love the Web and spend lots of time using/enjoying/learning from it but that doesn't make me despise newspapers or feel like I have diminish them just to prove I'm not a has-been.

    Agree completely.
Gannett, I think, could have avoided this silly print vs. online war when the company introduced the information centers. I guess some companies just find that the "divide and conquer" approach works better. It didn't have to be print = old and online = innovation.

  19. Yeah, I was just thirteen, you might say I was a
    Musical proverbial knee-high
When I heard a couple new-sounding tunes on the tubes
    And they blasted me sky-high
And the record man said every one is a yellow Sun
    Record from Nashville
And up north there ain't nobody buys them
And I said, but I will

    And it was...

Nashville Cats, play clean as country water
Nashville Cats, play wild as mountain dew
Nashville Cats, been playin' since they's babies
Nashville Cats, get work before they're two

  20. Have you ever noticed that your hands are clean after reading the news on the Web.

After touching a paper they are covered in black ink pigment.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Have you ever noticed how stupid your fridge looks with parts of your laptop screen taped to it? Or how authentic your scrapbook seems with a printed out honor roll?

Both mediums have benefits. And disadvantages. Better to find out how to make money delivering audiences to advertisers.

  24. Gee, aren't they sweet? It's about time. Previously, they just tried to get US to donate to it, many times on the same days they were handing several employees their cardboard boxes and saying get out of the building. Really, $25,000 is all they could pony up? How cute. How about your yearly bonus, Craig? That might help.
    _________

Gannett will donate $25,000 to the Employee Disaster Relief Fund instead of sponsoring a Gannett/USA TODAY holiday party at McLean headquarters this year. The donation will be used to help employees whose homes are damaged by natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes or tornadoes.

Are you saying readers need to have offshored ads because they don't have "issues?"

  32. Meanwhile in Asheville, the star columnist (who wrote the story last week that gas supplies would be "low" over the weekend) wrote a chuckling column Monday about how he had hoarded gas, filling up 3 autos and a boat, while previously telling readers "not to panic." That appeared the day the city ran out of gas. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday cars were lined up and obstructing traffic for up to 3 hours at the few pumps with gas. The city curtailed activities, schools and colleges closed, people could not get to work. Hilarious column - a great nominee for GCI public service journalism.

  33. How good are they really? Who said this about 15 years ago?

"the electronic super highway is nothing more than a dirt road"

SCJ in a speech at corporate to all the Gannett publishers.

    What Vision...

  34. Your notice that on the gannettblogsucks, he(it is a he), said he has nothing to do with Jim's Blog. Their is nothing on the blog, that said, it has "NOTHING TO DO WITH GANNETT". Jim you made it very clear, that you have no connection, to Gannett. When I write, or interview someone about Gannett. I made it very clear, that I am in no way connected with GCI. The fact that Tara, has NOT posted any denial, here or anywhere else, that Gannett or anyone who worked for GCI, is behind gannettblogsucks. So what does that tell you? I'll called Tara, and got a busy ring. Jim, I think, you better try and get a hold of T, and ask her, for the record.

  35. we cut positions and layed off people and told times are tough and could get worse. But last week the Publisher took the OC and spouses to a resort for the annual planning retreat. Big dinner with lots of drins and wine. Basic room was $300/night 2 nights x 7 plus food and drinks fr all! Sure makes me feel good that I am doing 2 other people's work.

Also, don;t forget that the OC gets free gas and the Opns Director and Pub get their cars washed too!

    Gee I'm happy

  38. 7:16- yes! I agree with you. I've wondered about that scholarship program, too. We sent in an application a few years ago. We did not get any sort of notice that our application was received and as you say, info on the awards actually granted seems to be a secret.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
