In Indianapolis, another one bites the dust
Former Indianapolis Star columnist Ruth Holladay tracks the number of employees who've left since Gannett bought the newspaper eight years ago. She's now up to No. 205.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Who need Pulitzers?
ReplyDeleteGannet has "Well Dones" and Gold Medal newspapers ... and presidents rings for a select few.
This year (last week's newswatch):
The Des Moines Register and its editor, Carolyn Washburn, have received Gannett's top news awards for 2007.
Gold Medal and President's Ring winners were announced today (Thursday, April 10, 2008) at Gannett headquarters in McLean, Va.
For its exceptional overall performance, The Des Moines Register wins Gannett's Outstanding Achievement Award for Best News Performance by a Newspaper.
This is the fourth time the Register has won the top award, and the ninth time it has won a Gold Medal.
Washburn is named Gannett's Editor of the Year and top President's Ring winner for 2007. This is her third President's Ring.
And top editor, Dennis Ryerson won for:
... his leadership in implementing an aggressive and focused plan for zoned community coverage throughout the Indianapolis metro area, for embracing strategies that assured the Web site was robust, timely, engaging and innovative.
Are you serious?
ReplyDeleteI'd think I'd take a Pulitzer any day over Best of Gannett...a little more cache, me thinks.
I think he means cachet.
ReplyDeleteSue Clark...welcome to Gannett Blog :)
ReplyDeleteI think the first commenter was being sarcastic.
ReplyDeletebeing the best of gannett is like being the best bobsled team in jamaica.
ReplyDeleteThe number is probably higher then 205 if you consider folks outside of the newsroom. They are emplyees to you know.
ReplyDeleteIt was a weak attempt at humor, anon 4/18 7:22 p.m. Must have missed its mark.
ReplyDeleteAs a recipient, I loved Well Done recogniction and "Best of ..." Gannett or best of my newspaper.
But the greatest sense of triumph was when I entered my stuff, on my own dime, in journalism contests and won (much to the astonishment of my employers). Have some pretty prestigeous national awards in boxes in the closet somewhere.
Entries in Best of Gannett are chosen for exhibiting the company's initiative of the day, not necessarily exhibiting the criteria of other journalism competitions.
To win is pretty heady stuff. Hugely motivating, persosnally.
Anon @ 6:47 p.m.: I LOL'd!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to take some time to count the number who have left from my site. It's an obscene number, I'm sure, and it's only climbing higher.
If you haven't figured it out; they want you to leave, so you can be replaced with a $32k newbie who will also have better actuarial health.
