Gannett partner MediaNews keeps chopping

By my count, the San Jose Mercury News' latest round of job cuts, announced today, reduce the size of the newsroom by as much as an additional 10% over endless previous cuts. Under Knight Ridder's ownership during the dot-com boom, the Merc was one of the country's best regional papers. But it wound up in the hands of Denver-based MediaNews Group after Knight Ridder's 2006 sale. MediaNews operates its Bay Area News Group together with Gannett and Stephens Media.

MediaNews, you'll recall, is the outfit that doubts every newspaper needs its own copy desk -- and, oh, joy, Gannett really likes the way MediaNews operates! Indeed, a MediaNews copy editor whose job is now threatened at the Press-Telegram in Long Beach, Calif., cried as she told city council members on Tuesday: "I know how to spell your names."

Next stop, India?

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
