Against Corporate's wishes, here's your story

From The New Zealand Herald in Auckland to Corporate's hometown daily, The Washington Post, the headline tonight is revealing:

I understand the reality of being a publicly traded company, forced to kowtow to Wall Street's demands. But if you're going to lay off more than 200 employees, is candor too much to ask for?

The new estimated total newspaper layoffs and other job cuts is now 225 across at least 40 worksites.

  1. I spot-checked about a dozen Gannett websites, but didn't find this story. If it turns up, please let me know.

    1. "Spot checking." Now who's failing journalism 101?

If you said, "I checked 81 USCP websites, and not a one had the story," maybe that's the sort of work that would yield donations. It's not hard using a Google site search — maybe a 12-minute process. But I'm assuming you actually went to each site. Modern reporting, Jim — you're capable of it, and people need it. Now get it done.

    2. And when you conducted the search you recommend, did you turn up any Gannett sites that published the AP story?

    3. So now you want other people to do your work for you?

Anyone who donates money to you is wasting it.

    4. Here's a solution, which I'm going to post on another thread where I've also got an unhappy reader.

If you don't like the way I edit this blog, start one of your own. Compete for my readers, and if you grab enough, I'll walk away.

  2. They can't say how many, because there will be layoffs continuing next week.

  5. There were lay offs condiucted last year as well not as many but they did occur as part of Evan Rays goal to conform all GPS sites to use private distributors. That plan has failed to bring in the new revenue expected but it did cost many long time dedicated workers their jobs.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
