Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

My old newspaper's website has been down most of the morning. This is the only message I see:
ReplyDeleteHTTP Error 500-13 - Server too busy
Please wait a few seconds or click here to try again.
I wonder how long it will take for someone to fix this problem...
Which site is that?
DeleteAnd on mine:
DeleteGood morning,
We are experiencing some technical issues with our servers and, though today's eNewspaper edition of the Journal is online at http://poughkeepsiejournal.ny.newsmemory.com, it (along with our website and mobile sites/apps) may not be immediately accessible.
When you are able to get to the site, if today's edition does not appear immediately, please use the dropdown menu to select it.
We appreciate your patience and are working to get this matter resolved as quickly as possible.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Irwin M. Goldberg
Digital Editor

Wow, I just checked a few sites in Wisconsin, and I could get on two websites, but not two others.
DeleteThe price of having all your eggs in one basket? Priceless.
Stock looks poised for a breakout above the $22 resistance line in a couple days, fwiw. That is, if Scandalpalooza doesn't get any uglier and roil Mr. Market!
ReplyDeleteThis is 10:51 a.m. The site that was down belongs to The Fond du Lac Reporter. As of 4:00 p.m., it's down again. What is happening?
ReplyDeleteFond du Lac, Sheboygan, Oshkosh, Manitowoc websites down. Green Bay website gives you the "server busy" message when you click on some stories.
ReplyDeleteOMG....you have to watch the Al memorial, streaming now at the newseum and usat sites. HOLY CRAP!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've got the stomach for it.
DeleteIt was an hour long. Video at open and close of Al speaking into the camera giving his own obit. Speakers included Duff, Peanut, Madelyn Jennings, Tom Daschle, Martore, Judy Woodruff, and Siegenthaler. Also songs by the Freedom Forum Singers with Al throwing it to them twice and asking the crowd to stand. One of the songs was Wind Beneath My Wings. Al's last laugh - more memorial services than Reagan or Thatcher. And you know that the Freedom Forum footed the bill for it all, since Al was their favorite charity.
DeletePeanut returns!
DeleteIt was the whole can of mixed nuts today.
DeleteWhat's the latest with the Newseum? Are they looking at more layoffs in the near future?

DeleteMyCentralJersey.com, website for the Courier News (Somerville NJ) and Home News Tribune (East Brunswick NJ), is running normally at this moment.
ReplyDelete@Cincienquirer: Sorry, we are having some technical woes now on our site and mobile products. Thanks for your patience and we'll fix as soon as we can.
ReplyDeleteI want my digital subscription money back for today's inability to use the site. Oddly enough, my paper subscription loaded immediately when I pulled it out of the tube this morning.
ReplyDeleteSay what you will, Uncle Al was a dynamic man.

Funeralcapade.
DeleteHe was a prick who treated most people like shit. Yes he embraced diversity, created USAT which NEVER made a profit during his tenure, he also fired a flight attendant and left her in Fargo ND, paid his girlfriend to decorate many Gannett buildings and took millions after he left. Lets not rewrite history.
DeleteHas anyone heard of the restructuring in June???
ReplyDeleteDetails! Details! Who's restructuring - Gannett, Freedom Forum, ???
DeleteCorporate will begin it's long awaited consolidation of the advertising sales dept.'s across the USCP. Salesforce----> Winthrop Group----> World Class Sales Force transformation...... If these three things have happened at your site. You're up! And just a thought before all the pooh-poohing commences. Who thought we could ever consolidate ad design, page design, HR, IT, finance, and production.
DeleteKeep in mind that a big restructuring of the U.S. community newspaper division was just announced, with the consolidation of the Central and South regional groups of dailies under Laura Hollingsworth's move to Nashville.
DeleteI've heard rumors. So it is true?
DeleteWell, 10:05 p.m., yes, Gannett did consolidate all those departments. But at what cost? We can do it; doesn't mean it's a wise or prudent move.
DeleteJim missed the restructuring that's currently happening in the East Group. It's an odd time for our friends in Jersey to be so quiet.
DeleteIn Jersey we're watching + waiting!
DeleteDoes anyone have any insight on the new compensation plan for advertising?
DeleteLots of behind closed doors meetings today with finance and advertising and a new compensation meeting was held! Something IS coming to advertising I do believe!
Delete@7:25--USCP restructuring or USAT? Know something?
ReplyDeleteAre they planning centers of excellence for remote ad sales? Oh, boy.
ReplyDeleteCincinnati at epicenter of IRS story and Enquirer has nothing. Fox affiliate getting all the hits. What a shame.
ReplyDelete
Delete“Angry Obama Fires IRS Chief” was an Enquirer headline today.
Yet, facts like Miller was still staying on until his term legally expired in June didn’t get in the way of the Enquirer’s story, one that excluded that piece from an e-mail they clearly read.
It’s pathetic and naked omissions of material facts like that is why readers increasingly distrust this industry.
What is Winthrop Group?
ReplyDeleteSan Diego News laid off several of its advertising managers today.
ReplyDeleteIndy is in the works. Too much dead weight managers and sales staff.
DeleteWhen you go to the Cincinnati site on a tablet, the sports picture asking if you want the tablet edition is a picture of an Alabama running back being tackled by a player from LSU. Is this the best way to showcase what you're in for as a consumer of information meaningful to this market? We're just being sloppy. These missteps are just unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteThe digital geniuses had some problems, it seems, with their Wednesday crap push, I mean, code push.
ReplyDeleteThe system they have come up with is horrible and inefficient when it works correctly. And then, sometimes it doesn't work at all.
So now all digital CO-WORKERS are stupid? You must be a miserable person to be forced to work next to. When was the last time you were perfect. Things happen when you use or run anything electronic/digital. Get off your hateful high horse
Delete"Things happen."
DeleteYeah, and the dog ate your homework.
Posts like 12:00's here amuse me. There are quite a few whiners who always have an excuse for why they can't do their job. Yet when someone else messes up ...
DeleteFor the second day in a row, the website for the Fond du Lac Reporter is down. Any reason why this is happening?
ReplyDeleteYes, you may be sure there is always a reason. Say what you will about technology, it never acts, or acts up, on its own.
