An independent journal about the Gannett Co. and the news industry's digital transition
Has Cincinnati started getting their newspapers from Columbus yet.
When is this going to happen? I thought the launch was in Jan.
It's amazing that revenues are down so far that they could no longer afford to keep me in my minimum wage job.
Another layoff, under the radar. How many hundreds more are happening throughout the vast empire of Gannettland?
Somebody better tell us because Jim's spreadsheet is dead.
If you received a notice of termination - would you want an announcement made that you're getting fired? This is why these are "under the radar." If they concerned you, you would be notified.
Does advertising work on the net?......I do not think so.....Does anybody read pop ups?......When this clicks, what happens next?....we are left with a news service without any advertising....no revenue.
Shreveport will be serving employees chili next week for a "COST". WTF. Don Bailey we do not want to pay for chili when we have increased medical premiums with no raises and planned furloughs for third quarter. Is this newspaper so broke that you could not afford to feed the few employees that has not run off to other employers? This is a slap in the face to the remaining employees. It's simple Don Bailey and you make it hard. UNBELIEVABLE!
Sounds like Kevin Hall.
We had chili last week at our employee meeting and it was FREE! Looks like Don Bailey need to take lessons from other publishers. If this is for charity as another poster stated just how much will some chili money bring in. Gannett sends money to every site in the form of Gannett foundation money for the site to distribute to the local community as the publisher sees fit. Use these dollars wisely and you will not have to ask your employees to supplement the pool.
This chili string is a perfect example of the kind of people I don't appreciate. Are they really complaining about an event designed to raise money for local charity? So don't buy a bowl Scrooge!!! This is what you complain about???

who is Don Baily
It's a United Way fundraiser. Eat it or don't. It's not mandatory. While I agree that Baily is out of touch, complaining about the chili thing is just lame with all the real problems in Shreveport.
Shreveport problems - Don Bailey, increased medical premiums, 2013 scheduled third quarter furloughs, layoffs, out of touch with community, no pride for American Flag flagpole empty, AND Don Bailey
Don do not buy the chili just give the money you were going to use to charity. Charity will get more if you would just give them the money from that Gannett foundation. It's not the chili employees are complaining about - its the lack of you and your you attitude. If you run and don't look back Shreveport will be grateful.
3:10 Don Bailey is Shreveport's publisher who is so out of touch - I saw him at a local event so I went over to speak with him and he did not recognize me as one of his employees. He stood at the back of the room until dinner was served. This is what we get from him at The Times. A man that distance himself from reality and then he wants to stand in front of us once a month and call himself publisher. If the truth be told - we only come to the meeting for the prizes.
Uhm.... At the site I worked at, United Way fundraisers were mandatory. This wasn't from the publisher but rather an overbearing vp.
At several sites, Gannett and otherwise, United Way fundraisers were either mandatory, or there was considerable pressure on employees.Which also leads to the matter of a conflict of interest. I would think a newspaper pairing up with a charity could call into question the paper's reporting of the charity when the charity is in the news.
Don Bailey I am one of your production mailroom employees. I work at The Times part time when I'm away from my full time job. I have only seen you twice in my time here at The Times. I have been working here over five years. The one time you came through the mailroom with two ladies you acted as if we were good friends and then I saw you the very next week at a grocery store and you did not know who I was. We checked out at the same time and when I acknowledged you outside you acted as if I was going to rob you. I am a fan of Jim's blog because it keeps me informed of what's going on in Gannett. Yes, I am an inserter and I do read. I was laid off from a job of 12 years and now work 2 jobs to support my family. My wife is a stay at home mother for our twin 5-year olds. I will not be participating in your chili function because I cannot support a person who is not "real". I support charities through United Way on levels you would never imagine. I find it hard to support you through The Times because you do not support your production employees. So yes, inserters can write, read and we do support our families without handouts. I am sure this is so far from your reality because you cannot connect with anyone not making your salary. You need help!
Fo shizzle ma nizzle??!!
What? speak english please.
That would roughly translate to - "I am not lying about that my friend."
But 5:45 actually used it in question format, which slightly changes the translation to - "Are you telling the truth my friend."
I thought the chili money went to charity. Seems like a normal event, if it does. What's the beef?
I appreciate Saturday's spool much because I work for Gannett.
THAT IS SO MUCH Darn auto spell tablet.
The tablet's also to blame for the apostrophe abuse, I suppose?
Yes it is.
Watch out for those co workers that ate the chili!
So Jim when you are done with the hard hitting chili journalism will you be making the USAT announcement or have you given up on actual Gannett business news? Don't get me wrong the chili comments have been mesmerizing !!!!
Where has Jim posted anything about chili?
I haven't posted anything; it's all been in readers' comments.
So long, Gannett and thanks for making it so easy to beat your broken system. Spent some diligent days doing undercover job hunting, which barely made up for the pitiful raise and ridiculous amount of work. Even had my best interviews on company time (my managers were too busy covering the butts and probably interviewing as well to notice). Thanks Gannett. It's been miserable. But it's Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and happy everything for this lucky girl. Over and out! Bye bye now.
Congrats to you. It feels great to jump ship.
Heh 4:48 those same colleagues you outsmarted are doing cartwheels because you are gone. Buh bye!!!
You just can't stand it when someone leaves, gets opportunity, gets healthy and is happy about it.Damn, must be terrible to be you, angry and bitter all the time,a typical Gannett employee.Jealous aren't you and in a big, big, way.
Oh snap! Grow up
8:27, ironic coming from you.
You think your photo galleries generate hits? Take a look at what passes for news in Jim's neighborhood. Maybe Mariyam can get some revenue ideas next time she's On The Road... http://tinyurl.com/bcp2n6s
when is callaway going to stop editing marketwatch and start editing usa today/
Callaway needs to spend some time figuring out what most of his people do all day. Not much of anything except meetings and fucking off.
http://www.news-press.com/article/20130210/NEWS01/130210002/The-News-Press-delivery-delayed-by-2-1-2-hoursAnother Sunday, another 2 1/2 hour delivery delay at Ft Myers.
Callaway barely spends any time in the newsroom beyond editor meeting. His interaction with staff seems centered on what headlines are on stories. This aint leadeship, y'all.
Thanks for the last 20+++ years Gannett - the .07 cent raise last year was amazing - can't wait to see how much the bosses realize I did behind the scenes to help our newspaper out. - My boss refuses to look me in the eye - And the Chili next week for United Way? No Thank You. The 100K monthly I brought in revenue with no commissions is all the CHILL-EE I need....
Another layoff, no doubt. How many more are out there?
Come on Jim. You are so asleep at the wheel here.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
