  1. Here's a great question to start the day, well, maybe a couple of questions.

    1. Those of you that have left Gannett and are still on here commenting about how bad it is or was before you left, why are you still on here making comments and do you now bash your current company on another blog site or your companies blog site?

    2. Those of you that are still with Gannett and continue to piss, moan and bellyache about everything from blue balls to the price of health insurance, why are you still with Gannett? If life inside Gannett is so terrible why stay, just leave and collect your unemployment.

    3. 2/19/2013 7:52 AM -- It matters not WHY you stay. The point is that you've made your choice, and you decided that you're better off staying. Fine. Either GROW UP and accept responsibility for that decision, or do something different. Just STOP WHINING.

    4. News flash, 7:52 - it will never be a strong economy for the newspaper industry. Those days are gone. Stop using that as an excuse.

Well, if you love working at Gannett (as it appears you do)so much, why are you on a blog such as this?

    6. its called "free speech" you don't have to listen !

    7. Gotta love the loaded logic of the original poster. S/he assumes a prevalent and worrisome grievance can only be made by the same people. Wow, talk about simplistic! Evidently the individual fails to appreciate that it's the prevalence of the phenomenon, not some clique of whiners, which can be expressed by folks who have never availed themselves to this blog before. Must be an HR person.

    8. If you want to call it whining I call it the truth. I still come on here from time to time because no other company I ever worked for treated people as cold and callously as I saw them treat the employees that were the Heart and Soul of the Company.

    9. I also have a lifelong career to consider as that poster. You, Mr. 8:38, are probably just out of college scoring your first "real" job at 20 grand a year. WOW.

    10. Great question, 7:18. I wonder that a lot, too. If we really knew the facts, I bet they would be something like this:

      * Far fewer people than comments -- same people saying the same things, day after day.

      * Very few people who actually have the stones to try to get anything changed. (Cue the angry responses: No one will listen! And on and on ...)

      * Very few people who have the stones to leave.

      * Those who have left are far from thriving. This give them A LOT of time to come on here and whine.

    11. 4:20, #1 -- 4:20 #2 here. I checked for my post and happened across yours.

What in the world are you implying? That you plan to stay for life and to whine every day of it? Please, do us a favor and spare us if that is your plan.

    12. I've left the company, but am still here commenting from time to time. Sometimes they're positive comments, but mostly not. And that's because Gannett's earned every one of their comments for the way they do business. I'm doing slightly better financially with my new employer, but immensely better emotionally. And I have no reason to bash my current employer on any forums because they don't give so many of their employees reasons to spew piss and vinegar. I have a real desire to see newspapers succeed, as well as my former coworkers still in the business, and when I see dumb decisions, I can't help but comment. That's why I'm still here.

    14. Considering the decline of posts and anybody giving a damn about this blog, this smacks of one of Jim's contrived posts.

    16. There's little doubt now that either Jim is seeding the blog with poorly disguised, inane comments, or he's getting someone to do it for him.

The pattern is growing easier to spot.

    17. Note: The BB Banikarim insult is played out. It was never very funny or creative even at the start, and certainly not so after hundreds of posts.

You deposed marketing people think this is some great idea. But it's not. Realize this and try to come up with something else.

    18. The only broken-record "pattern" here on this blog/forum is comprised of the incredibly depressing, self-centered and demeaning put-downs professed by the loyal company types.

Ha, I used to be a loyal type, myself -- right up until the morning I came to work as always early, expecting to pour myself into my work sans breaks, sans lunch; expecting to work late, work the weekend, etc., and they screwed me, my career, my life and my family over royally.

"You don't have job, now. Good bye." Bastards didn't even have the guts to tell me to my face. They sent an underling of an underling.

But at least that unfortunate person was human. I could tell by the fact one had red eyes, tears recently wiped away before leaving one's office.

Pissed am I? Yes. Disgusted? You bet. Rightfully so! Professionals don't treat other professionals like shit. Especially when the former are recent arrivals from "corporate" and the latter are longtime, reasonably talented workers. This company deserves what it reaps. And all you cheerleaders with the "whining" accusations will get the same wake-up call that I received... and twisted just for good measure.

As some others have noted, not everyone is a steady, well, blog fly. In fact, in view of values of this company being virtually identical at each of its locations, it's hardly surprising there is such a seemingly unending supply of very upset current and/or former employees.

Indeed I don't check the blog too often. Only to keep aware of the humiliating kiss-ass hell some of my friends still go through. In all other respects I've moved on, freelance. But when I call it up, it's still disconcerting. The place still sucks. The same disconnected execs are still the same disconnected execs who oddly reap very little respect.

  2. Speaking of whining, Shreveport's chili contest was a flop. The chili had to be given away "FREE" as a poster stated it should have been. My question to Don Bailey, will you be giving United Way some of that Gannett Foundation money because it is clear they did not make any money off your chili games? Do the right thing and give United Way that Gannett Foundation money.

    1. Don Bailey does not know how to do the right thing. If he did, would Shreveport be where it is right now. Pete Zanmiller why did you leave us?

      Delete
    2. Because we have Kevin Hall to the rescue. NOT.

      Delete
    3. Hasn't Kevin Hall increased advertising dollars?

      Delete
    4. Don Bailey will not be giving to United Way because that would mean he cares and he DOES NOT care about anyone in Shreveport except his favorites. It is very clear who his favorites are and there are not too many at the newspaper. Don close your eyes and just give the money to the charity. United Way helps a lot of other non-profit agencies and this would be an excellent agency to give the Gannett money to. Try to think of someone else for once and shock all your employees at the Shreveport Times..

      Delete
    5. Don Bailey cannot shock us just as he cannot shock our advertisers. I am with the poster above what happened to Pete Zanmiller a man that at least cared about the employees.

    6. I don't know Don Bailey but it sounds like Don Bailey DOES NOT = Shreveport.

  3. Tried out Florida Today's new "News in 90 seconds" video. Why oh why must a newspaper pretend to be a TV station? For all the hype you get a person reading what seems to be the copy right off the print edition. How is that better? How is that different? I was hoping to be surprised...not!!

  5. If I were keeping a list of ways USA Today is starting to format articles like those in Marketwatch -- where Editor in Chief David Callaways previously worked -- I'd include this one.

  6. Jim, the reporter you cite churns out some of the goofiest, poorly written opinion pieces posing as stories of any Junior High student I know.

  7. "Enquirer Media announced Wednesday that the new Enquirer will debut Monday, March 11.

"The new Enquirer will feature a more convenient size, bolder colors and graphics with the same in-depth news, unique local features and content produced by its team of 150 journalists.

"The transition to the new Enquirer has been years in the making and incorporates feedback from readers and advertisers throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky."

Interesting to read all the negative comments on this story: http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20130220/NEWS01/302200106/Enquirer-sets-date-new-format

    1. Negative, because the papers always try to put a positive spin on their less-is-more reality. Readers know it's BS.

    2. No way are there 150 journalists producing the Enquirer. They've got less than 100. Wasburn has been tossing around that number since she landed in Cincinnati two years ago. She was also called out about it in a recent radio interview.

      Delete
    3. The "150 journalists" includes clerks, photographers and the underpaid, hard-working folks at the community weeklies that are given away free around greater Cincinnati. Pretty much any warm body is a "Journalist" in Enquirer Media parlance.

  8. “Enquirer….produced by its team of 150 journalists.”

Not exactly, as Enquirer Media may have 150 journalist when one counts those working at the Community Press & Recorder (for lower pay), but all are not dedicated to just it as Washburn, Buchanan would like all to believe.

It may be a strong marketing pitch, but one at the expense of the Enquirer’s credibility with readers.

    1. Actually, there are 150-160 people classified as newsroom employees at the Enquirer. That may include Community staff as you say. They certainly do not have 150 journalists (reporters and people that manage reporters) in the newsroom of the Enquirer.

  9. NYT is putting The Boston Globe on the market. Wonder if Gracia can resist the temptation to buy her hometown paper. She's not McCorkie, but she does love Beantown and the Red Sox.

  10. When I was let go last year I could tell the General Manager sincerely felt bad about it. He said it was part of the next step in GPS restructuring plan and there was nothing he could do about it. I worked with a good group of people and I think GPS Corporation made a poor decision that came from the top in letting us local people go. I don't believe Bob Dickey would have made the same decision when he was in charge.

    1. Do not kid yourself. Bob Dickey is not a friend to anyone. He is a yes man all the way.

  11. I don't believe I am kidding myself. I may be wrong about Bob Dickey but I don't think we would have been let go if it wasn't for Evan Ray.
