  4. 1:31: I'm not a wrinkled one, but I am old enough to know that karma is a bitch. Some day you too will have wrinkles. If you stay in the corporate world, you too may have what has happened to thousands of employees in Gannett happen to you because new technology will come along and you too will be replaced. Yep, karma is a bitch. Keep being hateful, I'm sure it defines who you are inside.

    1. I'll think about that. But I have something to add.

  6. Well, one does see the cult of youth as being prized by Gannett. Most other countries, experience is respected — not demeaned like the arrogance offered by 1:31 here. As for Gannett, that's why its sites have all the T&A galleries and why they have the absurd "30 under 40" (or whatever it's called) ageist crap. What an inferred insult, using chronological age rather than job performance as some absolute reference point. Can't wait 'til 1:31 grows up and learns a little more open worldview.

    1. For sure 1:13...the newbies all come into the info centers thinking they know everything, until they are forced to cover anything breaking, controversial or uncomfortable. If they took the time to learn from the experienced people, they'd have brighter futures. As it is, they will be replaced soon with bloggers and low paid and unpaid "community" journos.

  7. Any papers out there experiencing corporate hench men coming to their paper, interviewing selected staff to find out what's wrong with management and taking a survey about why one would want to work for Gannett or leave Gannett?

    1. Are you referring to the folks from World Class Advertising led by Nancy Soliday? If so, they are for sure on a hunting expedition to find someone to blame for poor sales performance. They have ruined several deparments across teh company so far. Be careful what you say, because it all comes back in a report and though you're not mentioned by name, you are by department and/or title.

    2. When you say"ruined several departments", what do you mean? Can it get any worse? Prior to these meetings, several World Class foot soldiers were fired.

    3. Sounds to me like they are trying to identify "the troublemakers" so they can be singled out for upcoming firings. Let's face it, Gannett does not care about the employees and how they feel about the incompetent management locally or in Virginia.

    1. Sounds right up Brad Robertson's alley. He'll keep talking, and talking, and talking up the failed concept until it actually seems plausible and worth saving.

    2. deal chicken, huuuummmm let's see, i see the deal, i go to the retailer and tell them hey, if you give me the same deal without going through deal chicken, the retailer makes more money because they don't have to give the chicken a cut of the deal .

    3. I dont think its a failed concept. I think they just realize that its a failed opportunity when you have a sales force capable of making phone calls to people that dont want to run deals but may say yes to other forms of digital advertising...

  9. Here's a head scratcher . . .

Why is it I can take a picture of a check with my cell phone, and the cash is in my account 10 minutes later. But . . .

Let me complete my "Healthy Actions" in August, and those results aren't populated until December. Meaning, I get a letter in November stating I will pay $18.46 a pay period as a "Healthy Actions Surcharge".

Who knew the US Mail is faster than the internet?

I do have this consolation. After speaking with Gannett Benefits and UHC, I am informed that the surcharge will only run until March, and then be refunded in April.

So now there are THREE things certain in life:
Death, taxes, and Gannett extracting/withholding money from your paycheck.

    Merry Christmas, everyone!

  11. Scoops (at least to me):
    * USCP units are being told not to budget for furloughs in 2013. This is in line with Dickey's statement at the recent editors meeting that "we hope to get out of the furlough business."
    * One caveat, tho: USCP sites will be given revenue targets that call for them to make up the YOY (year-over-year) difference (in other words, we have make enough money to cover the expense of restoring the salaries we will be paying out because we're not having furloughs).
    * It would appear that furloughs won't happen in Q1 and, if they happen later, it will be a decision at the group level (with encouragement from corporate).
    * Raises are back, but only for limited, targeted and selected performance. Gracia gets quite irate when she hears that we cancelled raises this year. "We HAD raises," she said, "for those who deserved them."

  12. Tim Regan is leaving Gannett. The magnitude of the loss will surprise folks in the C Suite. Good Lord who is next.

    1. Looks like he is keeping his very public promise to have a tantrum if he wasn't promoted. This is no loss. He is all talk but does little. Glib, yes. Productive, no.

  13. Just think of all the talent that has walked out the door unassisted by the corporate monkeys. I can think of a few publishers, a few GPS people, a few corporate people, some USA Today folks, and the list goes on and on. And these people I'm thinking of were all intelligent employees who were at the heart of this organization who were employed for more than 20 years. I think that's all telling of how they viewed this company's future. For those who left the industry altogether, I'm thinking they were the smartest of all.

  14. Thank you.
I'm making almost as much now as when I worked full-time for this horrible company. It wasn't easy to get back on my feet either. But I found doing journalism part-time and doing something else entirely different as well could sum up to about the same.

    Without the Little Napoleon micro-managers.
