  14. to 6:56 and others like you...hurt gannett? Pull your pranks with no thought or care of the people working after you...the folks putting the paper together and out the door to the carriers who have to sit and wait for the papers, taking time from THIER lives so you can feel good?

    Nice guy!

  15. Gannett gives the press operators in phx bust outs every day Gannett eats well over 100,000 dollars a year im free labor that should be used and have the freshman do cleaning press

  18. To 11:40PM, You said it right when the carrier has to sit and wait for the paper. I am a carrier and we have to wait not knowing when the paper will be there (and it gets later every week) and then have to make up the time difference because the customer HAS to have the paper by 5:30AM no matter what. If not, we get charged a huge fine for something that is not even our fault.

  19. 7:38, this is business. Document times of all deliveries, like in a hospital. If problems develop -- the court will want to see your records.

BTW: hope everyone -- including useless carpet-bagging Gannettoid bureaucrats -- had a nice Thanksgiving.

  22. 9:18 never worked for Gannett or USAT and just spews left-wing hate here. And makes Jim's life worse.

He's why Obama only got 50%.

9:18, you hate so well. You are Gannettoid, writ large.

  23. Yes, I am. At my site, we have two new execs who were so surprised to learn that the office is open today and that we needed staff to work. But they were not offended enough to do anything about it.

So they shook their heads in disbelief and hauled off for the long weekend...happy that at least there are some that sacrificed the day to cover for others. And they were not one of them.

    That's our leadership.

  24. What documentation do you have concerning layoffs and furloughs? Anyone can come on here and spread fear, again. Jim, any validity to what these people are saying?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Two weeks ago, people were posting about possible layoffs at USAT. A few days later several really good people were let go. Sometimes posters here know quite a bit about what's going on.

  27. To 6:43- That's how I roll, the truth hurts, and you know what, corp cold give a shit about getting a paper out on time, they still get their money. My advice to you, just lube it up and rub it real good, may make you feel better. Thats what we do in the pressroom while the press is running, what an orgasm, press running at top speed , some one whips out a web and the whole crew jerks off for 20 minutes:)
Hope I made your day , you liberal corp troll
I am in the loop and plan on being their for a long time. Say hi to Gracie and Buchanan for me

  28. to 12:113- I sucsefully predicted the last round of layoffs and furloughs, do you know why, because I am in the no. I have eyes and ears at the Crystal Palace, DO YOU..I doubt it. Just give it a week or so to come to fruition. I am not proud to post it, because I hate to see any one lose a job. But facts are facts, and as for you JIM, I will give you documented AS SOON AS i GET AN EMAIL, THE i WILL FORWARD IT TO YOU mR. hOPKINS

  29. Jim, I just wanted to say the commet threats the last couple days have been very informative and peaked more interest than usaul. About time we have some decent topics to debate

  30. To 10:32
I work for Gannett,But I do not just sit at my desk mindlessly trying to figure out what to do next, I have connections and that is how I find out about layoffs and furloughs. It concerns me , so I dig deep into my friends in the company and piece things together, that is how I and others know more than the average gci worker bee. Look if your concerned about your job, do some digging, reach out to contacts in the company, it's not rocket science guy

    ReplyDelete
  31. 10:32 I can't corroborate any reports of layoffs. But based on the company's recent financial reports, I think jobs cuts -- big ones -- are very unlikely.

I'm less certain about the possibility of a furlough in the first quarter, based on recent history. Corporate has imposed furloughs in every first quarter since 2009 -- four in a row.

  32. The lunatics have truly taken over the asylum, the house of lies that Jim let them build.

Look at this latest string: Numerous ugly and vile posts deleted, another guy suggesting sabotage, someone else claiming to be "in the know" but misspelling the simplest of words. Insane. Simply insane.

Some truth-telling: Yes, there were a few painful layoffs at USA Today last week in marketing, but nothing like the prediction of "layoffs coming!'' that filled this space for days.

In a company with so many thousands of people and various workflows and budget needs, it is inevitable that isolated layoffs -- as opposed to mass layoffs we all suffered -- will occasionally happen. Stealth layouffs? Maybe. That's a fair assessment.

It still sucks, but there is no indication at all of another giant wave coming. Those who post such things here just for the "fun" of it are as twisted as the people they think they are exposing.

That Jim has allowed an environment to exist where most of the information posted by dissatisfied workers is false, cruel, defamatory and intended to incite hatred and anxiety is a testament to a company in distress but also a sign of someone (Jim), who has no idea how to control what could be a useful and even productive reader environment.

Jim has truly created an ugly monster here. He could fix it, and even wants to, but the sad thing is he doesn't know how because that takes a moral center and authority that seems to have left him decades ago.

One of the worst places on the Web? you bet.

(And yes, I do run my own media blog).

  34. Way to debate those point, 2 pm.

That's because you cannot. All of what 1:46 said is true, except maybe for the part about Jim wanting to fix the problem. I don't think he wants to fix it. I think he enjoys all the false rumors.

  36. What's up with the blog the last few days did Gannett offer some computer fundamental courses to GPS. Button pushing press operators finally learning how to push other buttons.Your threats are useless. You will continue to do what your told to do when your told to do it. Your skill set is very limited and Gannett is paying you more than you are worth. Wipe that droop from your mouth before you get it on the keyboard and get back to work doing what you do or should I say what your told to do.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 9:45 you must be talking about Usa Today, where staffing and stories are never an issue if you are a senior manager. They are clueless about staffing, processes for posting stories or publishing via Presto. Much back patting and attaboys about brilliant ideas executed with traditional Gannett mediocrity, though.

just stating the facts, happy to be employed, working hard and drinking kool aid.

  38. To 3:08 and others- If not for our very skilled press operator's your rag would look like a piece of dog shit, and that is about all that's in the paper lately.Just because you have a degree from Defry Journalism school doesn't make you any smarter than a pressman. We have degrees too pal and I bet have the guys I know who work in the pressroom can wipe your ass in any kind of test you put out their, yea, maybe we can type for a living like you do, but at least we dont sit on our fat ass all day writing about Joe sham getting screwed over by the local car dealer or some lame HS Sport story. You are a top dog, feel better about your self? loser go home already, we have read enough of your crying bs

  39. Jim The blog is up and running at full speed, like the banter..keep it up. Your editorial people are showing true colors and i like the Production posts, they don't pull any punches It sure makes it fun and interesting to read

  40. Thank God, a serious discussion, without Gannettoid-wannabe trolls here.

    1. The big layoffs of 2007-2008 were tied to the collapse of Lehman, Fannie/Freddie, GM, once in 75 years.

    2. Right now -- not good. Anything could happen. From Silicon Valley Bank economist -

    http://www.svb.com/Blogs/Joe_Morgan/Thoughts_From_Joe_-_November_16,_2012/

    3. Alice Rivlin, PhD, Jimmy Carter's economist, predicts another recession. Also not good.

What to do? Do your best. You can control that. You'll need it, if something goes wrong. You can't control the Greek debt crisis.

  44. I have been told that furloughs will come in the first quarter for community newspapers,, likely to be announced either next week or first full week in December. I don't know about broadcast, USA Today or Detroit. Even though stockholders say they don't like furloughs, it appears Wall Street is accepting them for Gannett as a regular part of its annual operating decisions. Haven't heard a peep about company-wide layoffs, but have seen occasional layoffs location to location.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Jim is basing his no widespread layoff prediction on the third quarter financial report. This report showed publishing revenue down again another 8%.That makes how many quarters of consecutive
    print revenue profit losses?
And we should think that Gannett will coast along at the current expense levels, without showing the revenue/profits increasing.why would they continue to let the broadcasting divisions carry the load and the print side just continue to bring down profit margins?
Go figure that Gannett would be caring enough to keep employee levels where they are on print side without showing increased profits.
    Highly doubtful.

    ReplyDelete
  46. pay attention folks ! yes more furloughs. since they started they remove that amount from the annual payroll budget. the furloughs will continue because they would have to add the week or two week or three weeks payroll back into the budget, and that's just NOT going to happen. once out the budget it will never go back into the budget !

  47. And who told you this, 8:14? Why should we believe you?

    ReplyDelete
  48. 10:09: First, I've seen the blog, so I know it exists. I warned that person not to ID it here for a couple of reasons. First, I knew it would be attacked by the same anons who attack everything else here. Second, you and others are eager to swallow the daily, unsourced rumors here, so you have no business demanding a name or a source.

That person might still change his mind and ID it. But you will still lack credibility.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm hearing the same thing as 8:14.

8:56 is correct. While overall company profit outlook is improving, the publishing group is still treading water at best. Look for GPS to be impacted significantly in the first quarter. Unfortunately, layoffs are coming.

    ReplyDelete
  50. 10:54, you and others are still trumped by 1:46. Sorry.

Until you can come up with either a source or something other than a stream of comments from people who claim to know something but who can't write a sentence to save their lives, you have nothing other than fear to offer.

If this were wrestling, 1:46 would have you in a full nelson and would be waiting for the match to end.

  52. Hey, I have a blog with TWO followers! Shout out to mom and dad! I made the big time, commenting on Gannettblog anonymously. WHOOOOOO HOOOOOOO.

To all the rest of youse, Jim is bad and I am great.

Seerieslee, the only lower form of the writing craft, beneath one blogger slamming another, is an anon making fun of the former.

    So you're welcome.
