    Poughkeepsie:

Deadline looms to file MTA payrool

Some local businesses said they've filed -- or are planning to file -- a protective claim for refund, in the event the Metropolitan Transportation Autority commuter transportation mobility tax is determined in the appellate court process to be unconstitutional.

  3. Another useless hire

  4. I've got a great idea. Let's hire more managers to improve USA Today. Hasn't the Hunke Method already proven to be an unmitigated disaster?

  5. Gannett continues to set records for useless hires. A general manager for USA Today High School Sports is worthless, but no doubt worth it to the hire in terms of big bucks. When is Gannett going to learn that, like politics, high school sports is local? Nobody in Louisiana cares about what is happening in New York and vice versa and on and on.

  6. Have fun reading your open enrollment e-mail for 2013. It warns of a two percent increase for health coverage. And now, about those three and four percent rasies to make up for the increase. ... yeah, sure, right!!!

  7. Learned in today's mail to my home I got ripped off by United Health Care to the tune of $1,280 and change. Lady running the non-doctor program said UHC would pick up the tab, stating it was a non-doctor visit. It was a three-day, nine-hour nutritional program for an illness. I sit here with indigestion as I think of the bill.

  10. To paraphrase the saying What a Country!!!, What a company!!! Gannett hires another bureaucrat whose purpose is to be the general manager of high school sports at USA.
My paper does not even have enough foot soliders to cover high school football games. We have an average of about eight games uncovered every weekend and trees die as we are pelted with e-mails for not covering games. Most of the coaches don't even bother to call us with highlights of their team's games.

  11. Isn't it amazing how Beusse and Banikarim and Micek and Ellwood and Maslowsky and Frank can spin useless hires and worthless projects and amateurish programs all around Matore.

Get your head out of your ass, Gracia. We're sinking out here.

  12. Blue Ball Banikarim wanted to control advertising and Martore let her have it. So where's the revenue, Banikarim? Or are you going to blame Murcko for the empty Gannett coffers?

  13. Whatever happened to Maryam Banikarim for her disturbing blue ball memo?

  16. Former Cincinnati Enquirer employee sentenced for Murder

Funny, I can’t recall ever reading that as a featured headline story a few years ago when a sales rep was sent to prison, so it's a bit surprising to see how the Enquirer run this today: “Former P&G board member sentenced.”

Unfortunately, this serves as more reason why many increasingly ignore this newspaper an act made easier by its recent roll out of metered access and implementing Facebook commenting verification not long ago.

  17. See if you can find the problem with this story from The Arizona Republic website about a storm coming Thursday.

  21. I just stopped going to azcentral and I don't miss it. Go directly to azlottery, added azfamily and the local newspaper websites. Why buy the cow when you can get the content for free. It has lost its allure. Of late, it lacks any really original stories and I just don't care about the bikini shots.

  23. So USA Today sports is now going to hire execs to oversee some sort of expansion coverage of high school sports? You have to be kidding me? High school sports? People read their local papers, websites for that stuff. It doesn't belong in a national paper, particularly one that doesn't even do a very good job anymore on professional and college athletics.

Boy, something is seriously wrong at USA Today. I sense a desperation and a level of incompetence I never thought would re-emerge there. I mean to go from McPaper to a degree of legitimacy/respect and back to a laughing stock, is truly astonishing to watch from the outside. I am sure on the inside it's like every Gannett paper...lots of people just pulling their hair out, wondering if anyone at the top has any idea of what it takes to put out a quality product. I mean how can USA Today afford to bolster coverage of JV volleyball in Iowa? Isn't this the same newspaper that laid off or drove out experienced journalists in recent years? Yet, they can pay six figures for a high school sports czar...amazing.

  24. "... trees die as we are pelted with e-mails for not covering games. Most of the coaches don't even bother to call us with highlights of their team's games."

How can someone write this mess and believe he is qualified to judge anything a newspaper company does? Major whiff.

  25. I appreciate how Jim deletes posts that try to identify anonymous posters. They are beyond juvenile and usually grossly mistaken - and always demeaning, another sign of mature judgement - in my case posts in the past, prior to Jim's policy, having been attributed to me which I never wrote, the laughable thing being that I've rarely posted here, this instance a rare exception, preferring to read. There is a certain entertainment value in that, though, these psychic mavens who presume such snarky insight. Oh, well...

  26. I am glad to be out of Gannett it was their loss in letting some of us go in the transition to GPS. I would never go back now that they have discarded my years of great service to them and the customers I served. I don't care what there over all earnings are. They lost revenue and net income when they let us go.

  27. A solid analysis of the Register's off-the-record, then on-the-record talk with President Obama.

I still don't understand why the Register brass ever agreed to go off the record, period.

  28. 2:22 I couldn't agree more! With cuts this systemic over recent years there is bound to be some deadwood cut, but it's still morbid. Real live talent just washed away as well no biggie to Gannett. I too am just relieved to be out of there but I still call up Gannett Blog every day. I admit I am stuck. It's not healthy. It's like post traumatic stress syndrome. But no professional managers save one risking his job. He left one day on the spot, bless him. No real training unless offered by people who were not qualified to train a monkey, no reliable resources, no opportunity to do what I did best, none, and especially no recognition for good work in the face of all this which was then used against yourself, their lack of recognition proof of your value. I now work freelance. Out of my home which is very nice. Money isn't consistent or very good, but it's better than getting it from the worst place I have worked for in my life.

  29. Here's a Northwestern lede on a breaking story from one of Oshkosh, Wis., biggest employers. The newspaper pretty much jizzes over every move the company makes. What a suckass lede.

Oshkosh Corp. will lay off 450 production employees between in January in response to declining military spending.

  39. Please, everyone. Stop and smell the roses once in a while. You're employed. You're doing something that still interests you and hopefully you're informing/entertaining readers.

You think Gannett is that much different than the crap doled out elsewhere? Dream on.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
