USAT | Callaway: 'the opportunities are enormous'

Newly named USA Today Editor David Callaway posted a farewell column today on MarketWatch, the financial news site where he is editor-in-chief. In it, he writes:

Let others fret about the future of journalism. The world now demands more news than ever. The opportunities are enormous. I’ve no doubt that the creative, colorful and exquisitely outrageous characters who make the magic at MarketWatch will be there to inform, entertain, delight, and enrage millions and millions of readers for years to come, every hour of every day.

  5. "Let others fret about the future of journalism"?

Wow. With the shape things are in now, if he's not fretting he just doesn't get it. Sad.

  7. No biz model and declining content. 12-18 months and he and Kramer will split.

  9. Ruthless and incompetent is a nifty combo. But hey, we got free ice cream again today. So everything is hunky dory.

  10. Wow you all really are lost forever. You've totally given up. New blood, new ideas and you just don't care. So again I ask, why are you still here?

  11. Jesus. The man has optimism for the future, and better journalism cred than just about anyone on this board. Thank god we have someone who cares about content. This is an exceptional hire: Ask anyone at Marketwatch.

And, no, I have no illusions about Gannett. But you have to give credit where it's due.

  12. 8:32,
Sure, tell me about all the new thinking and new ideas at USA TODAY. Feel free to list this new group's accomplishments. Give me just five...hell I'll take three!

Today I was a victim of a stupid decision made by one of these "new thinkers" which will hurt us in the marketplace at a time when we are struggling to survivor. Is this the "new thinking" you're talking about?

  13. These new thinkers and their agendas can wait. How about some new managerial talent on both news and business side. Ad managers who can actually sell ads. Editors who know what they are doing besides going to meetings. Repsonsive tech people. Quality control and better selection on the content.

until they make more than superficial changes (ooh, a new design! ooh. purpose walls) I don't want to hear any of their b.s.

  14. These guys are quickly finding out how little talent there is. People who have coasted for years are actually having to work, under scruntiny and deadlines. the nonchalant Hillkirk era is finally over. Thank God there is an adult in the room.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
