  1. Our advertisers are all too aware of the Gannett spiral downward. THAT is why the revenue is sinking and they aren't coming back.

  3. The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Don't you all get tired of the same old harangue? This blog is like group therapy for recovering moaners led by a shyster therapist. He'll keep fanning the negativity as long as you keep paying him.

  4. Gannett was in it to win it. Take all the money out of all the papers bought and then run the papers into the ground and layoff all the workers.

  5. The negativity is caused by management, not the blog. the blog isnt responsible for a failed business model, incompetent managers, a slumping stock price or hostile work environment. it doesnt create silly initiatives like Purpose Walls or make people reapply for jobs. And it doesnt make readers pay more for less product.

  6. 8:29 am-There will come a day that this BLOG won't be here for all of the "recovering moaners". That day will come and is coming soon when there will be no more Gannett to complain about. It's all in reach, even to the end. So Mr or Ms 8:29 am, you can stop the moaning too.

  8. Obviously 8:29 a.m. has never worked a day in a Gannett newsroom. I have. The complaints are legit. and necessary.

  9. Lafayette, In. hired a new Production Director from The Cincy paper. They have to find jobs for the Production guys, soon they will be printing in Columbus, OH. Hope he know what the hell is going on.

  10. Newsday has another story labeled exclusive that The Journal News published over a year ago. This one's on the Novack case. No ethics and no shame. Or maybe they aren't resourceful enough to do a search before they claim they're breaking something.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 6:21 They cite "documents obtained by Newsday." Maybe they're referring to The Journal News. It's a document.

  12. Why would Gannett want this blog to go away. Have they done something they are ashamed of? Could it be that they have a conscious.

  15. During the newsroom reorganization at the Republic, people are being reassigned to jobs they didn't apply for and don't want. Some are even having their salaries cut. If they balk, they are told, it's either the job or a separation package. At least one photographer took the separation package.

  16. 7:47, congrats! I didn't leave quite the way I wanted to, but I'm leaving, and that's the important part :)

    8:31, you sound jealous.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 8:31 says the same thing about anyone who has lost their job, so mature. Doesn't matter who they are or were. Sounds like an HR person to me. In my tenure, only met one HR head who was worth his/her salt; the person did the best he/she could given the environment -- the rest, more of 8:31's apparent ilk: staff as the enemy to be humiliated.

  18. 8:31 - Not nearly as glad as I am.

  19. Extreme Newsroom make over6/09/2012 1:56 AM

Whats a good way to waste time? Newsroom, excuse me, information center make over! How much productivity is wasted moving workspaces because a glass office dweller says so? It's like Catch 22 meets "Better Off Ted". Insanity and time wasting, it IS all in reach!

  20. Per the 8:54 post.
Layoffs in odd ways are happening, such as re-assignments forced or there's the saeparation package. That is the same as a layoff.
More layoffs that are under the radar and not reported as layoffs.
Are there more,we know there are and probably in huge numbers.

  21. Today's Clarion-Ledger, Jackson, MS reran yesterday's USAT page . Are we moving into a fast downward spiral? Not only are we being told by the readers that the paper is yesterday' s news, but the paper is actually yesterday's news!

  22. The Gannett/USA TODAY Purpose Team is designing a Purpose Wall in our McLean HQ. The Wall will display some of the most compelling words included in the corporate anthem, along with photos that capture the essence of who we are as individuals and as a company. We’re asking all departments on campus to submit photos that reflect you at work or the benefit of your efforts at work or in the community. Or both. It is entirely up to you. The Wall will be a representation of everything that brings us together as a community.

Please submit PRINTED photos - smallest size limit of 4 x 6 - to Michael Abernethy mabernet@gannett.com or Bill Librizzi blibrizz@gannett.com in Corporate Marketing (G-1) by Monday, JUNE 11. We ask that you include captions, including the names of the employee(s) in each photo, for easy identification. We will display them on the Purpose Wall which will be unveiled during our Corporate Purpose Celebration on Wednesday, June 13 at 3:30 p.m. in the Breaking News Café.

After the “unveiling,’’ please feel free to post photos to the Wall yourself.

Thank you in advance for participating! See you June 13!

If you have any questions/comments, please contact Jeanette Barrett-Stokes (ext. 5881), Michael (ext. 6074) or Bill (ext.6041).

  23. Two weeks and counting until I'm out of here. So long, suckers!

There's positions all over out there. All you need to do is get off your bitch-and-moan asses and take action -- and then maybe you too can flip the finger to this shit hole as you walk out. It's a great feeling on so many levels.

  24. The rest of the private sector is trying to create jobs while Gannett keeps cutting jobs. This has nothing to do with lost revenue and more to do with the egotistical culture that Gannett promotes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The Gannett/USA TODAY Purpose Wall?

Are you kidding me? Sounds like one of those old fashioned audition scenarios when casting agents pin photos and resumes up on a wall to pick choose who gets cast and who gets cut.

Or in Gannett/USA Today case, who gets cut and cut and cut.

I'll bet money the first picture posted front and center will be Madame Banikarim -- maybe in her bikini from the Cannes French Riviera?

    ReplyDelete
  26. You cant do a class action age discrimination against Gannett now that they've hired another old white guy to run USA Today into the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Breaking news cafe? Seriously?

We've got a cramped little lunch room with no sink, two filthy refrigerators and two gross microwaves.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Is the Clarion-Ledger paginated at a hub? Not that it really matters either way; that's something that should never happen.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've been gone for 11 months now and this place sounds like it hasn't changed a bit. Too bad.

  30. Got some Purpose Wall photos ready to go. One of a laid off worker packing their box. One of a retiring worker getting a crappy $25 Barnes and Noble card as a parting gift. One of empty office as everyone was laid off or is on furlough. One of former worker applying for unemployment. One of "retired" worker with surprised look when they see how little the pension really is. Then we need some of VPs spending their bonus checks and globe trotting to Cannes. This is really exciting.

  31. A "Purpose Wall" . . . where we'll "Pin" some photos.

O-o-o-oh! o-o-o-o-h! o-o-o-o-h! (Horschack voice) What if we made a WEBSITE where people could "Pin" photos??!!

    Magoo . . . you've done it AGAIN!

PS - Thanks for the "No Captcha Weekend"!

  32. All photos submitted to the corporation become property of the corporation, and may be used in other print or electronic media (known and unknown) now and in the future without any compensation.

Pictures of identifiable family members will be tagged with their biometric results so as to identify top prospects for health-cost-sourced layoffs.

Pictures may be digitally enhanced/adjusted to provide a more balanced mixture of gender, race and ethnicity among employees. We will also make you look happy.

  33. Is purpose wall only for employees? There aren't many left,so they better hurry up and take the photos. Of course there are plenty of outside contractors that they can put up. Is that okay or do they have to get those companies approval to show them?

  34. Wonder if the Palm Springs Newspaper is getting interest from the Tribune company. It would make since, that would combine the LA Times routes with the Desert Sun routes.

  35. This company flat out sucks! I have worked for GCI for over 25 years and this is the lowest bullshit I've ever seen.
It all starts at the top, and we have a bunch of women who do not have a clue on how to run a newspaper company. Never have meet a women who has a clue unless were talking about shoe's. Can't wait to get out

  36. 417, amazingly ignorant statement. Funny, every man i worked for during my time with Gannett was a kissass, a glad-hand, lacking a clear set of "equipment" and dumbed down the product to beyond embarrassing levels. Ciculation at my old paper NOSEDIVED by at least 50% under the helm of "men." And Dubow helmed the company at the same time. I'm no fan of Gracia or Maryam, but try drumming up some brain activity before posting your ignorance for all to see. I pity you.

  37. So, 6/09/2012 12:49 PM .... "There's positions all over out there. All you need to do is get off your bitch-and-moan asses and take action."

    Really?

Can you provide more details, or even better, links to these jobs? I really would be interested in pursing them. I have spent hours and hours online looking for them since the EROP. Would you mind sharing?

  38. Furloughs in NJ ... anyone else in NJ have this problem and what did you do?

I applied to unemployment got the money for one week unpaid furlough for the first quarter of this year, then got a letter saying it was a mistake and give it back. Filed an appeal. Got notice today I was denied. Not eligible, was the reason.

I can file another appeal, but what is going to be different about it from the first?

Oddly, the letter of denial came from James H. Fink, Director Email Unemployment Insurance. Same last name as the women who took my info over the phone.

Since it's NJ, think there's any nepotism going on here?

    ReplyDelete
  39. 9:53: when you were on furlough did you take one week all at once or random days here and there? If you took a day here, a couple days there, that might be a factor.

  40. The Stockholm Syndrome at LoHud is hilarious. Newsday is the bad guy and not Gannett? By my way of looking at it, Newsday coming to Westchester is the only thing that has stemmed more employee cuts ... Experience tells us not to get used to it. Clicks and circ are propably down after pay wall/price bump. What's next? No more lame music suggestions on The Listening Room blog? A pay cut for overpriced enterprise reporters with time to smoke, but no time to get a byline in? That'll be the day.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 7:05 Actually traffic is up. And the enterprise reporters have some surprises coming. Stay tuned. And they won't be rehashed stories about Sandy Annabi's house being in foreclosure. (Another story reported by LoHud in 2010.)

  42. Jim: I think you should do a "Purposeless Wall".
You could run short snippets from laid off/run off ex-Gannett employees. Maybe some photos that illustrate what life is like afterwards for those thrown out of a company they put their life into.

It would be a huge pageview getter, probably more than some of the USCP sites themselves!

    ReplyDelete
  43. 7:05
I think it's cool of you to want the lohud/JN enterprise reporters to stop smoking (did you gave one thorny reporter in mind LOL ). They will be healthier for it and able to report more hard-hitting articles...

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
