Mail | 'Downsizing incrementally for years to come'

Regarding Gannett Blog readers' reports of recent reduction-in-force job cuts, Anonymous@2:44 writes this afternoon:

There are reorganizations at individual sites that do not have to do with downsizing. Those result in RIFs that are not part of a corporate plan. Gannett Publishing Services has ongoing consolidations.

RIFs are a state of being for a company on the decline and trying to change. The recent buyouts relieve some pressure, but they do not replace the trend. We will be reorganizing and downsizing incrementally for years to come. Some of these will be orchestrated and some will not.

Buyouts really are a sign that you might want to make a change. Those who decided to ride it out took a risk.

  1. OK I'm confused. Hasn't the company been laying people off regularly for the last several years? Just wondering why this is a topic now. RIF has become a regular part of life at this company.

  4. This is amusing in light of the ad that Lo-Hud is running on NY radio promoting content evolution and touting "more feet on the street" as far as reporters go.
That would only be an accurate statement if the New Journal has hired a millipede in the "information center."

  6. You all know print is dying right. It's a dead technology. Every journalist in the world knows this. As digital revenues grow so will news rooms. It's simple math.
