Louisville | Two new passion topic sites debut

Kentucky's Courier-Journal has moved its new passion topics sites to the paper's main website; they had previously been published on the WordPress platform.

Both are in the form of Web verticals: sites with narrowly defined subjects appealing to advertisers. USA Today has been promoting the verticals concept for nearly two years now, but with very limited success.

In The Prime is about health. And A Better Life is for consumers. They're both produced by staff reporters.

Louisville's weekday circulation is 154,033; Sunday, 254,685, according to ABC's March 31 data.

What are you site's passion topics? Please post your replies in the comments section, below. To e-mail confidentially, write jimhopkins[at]gmail[dot-com]; see Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the rail, upper right.

  1. People who are fastidious about their lawns and love their wooden decks.

  2. By definition, I'd think that sex would be the No. 1 passion topic in any community.

But I guess that's a tricky sell to advertisers in smaller markets.

  3. All are WAY too general. Like Everything Gannett Does. Health is not a passion topic. Living well with type 2 diabetes is a passion topic.

Loving a good lawn, not so much. Growing orchids, yes. This is what the Internet enables. Smaler, passionate topics.

But why do I keep trying? If they want it to work, they can hire me as a consultant. Otherwise they can do what they always have: insist on being all things to all people, and continue to fail. Mass media is DEAD.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
