By the numbers | Ladies who launch -- careers!

Martore and Stewart
Both were born to modest family circumstances in the Northeast (one, the granddaughter of Italian immigrants; the other, the daughter of Polish-Americans), and graduated from blue-stocking, all-women colleges.

Each rose to the pinnacle of American media publishing, where they pull down multimillion-dollar paychecks. (To be sure, one costs her company a wee bit more for a weekend driver and personal security!)

And since March 4, 2005, when one of them got out of federal prison, shares in their respective companies have totally tanked.

Yes, I’m talking about Gracia Martore and Martha Stewart -- the latter, a USA Today guest at Saturday’s annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner extravaganza in Washington.

The tale o' the tape:

  1. That's an inspired (ahem) guest choice, USA Today!

  2. Jim knows something about hiring personal security. How much did yours cost, Jim?

  3. For $70K, I'd be winning to drive Marie Antoinette around.

  4. What a strange post. Sometimes you just try to hard to be witty.

  5. Fascinating post, Jim, and sadly telling that these men- bashing ladies can do no better. Only problem is that Maryam Banikarim is not included since we all know it's really just about her.

  6. But can Martore cook?

  7. Dear 6:49 a.m.: I know of no reason to believe that Ms. Stewart is a man-basher. I do believe, though, there is reason to think she is unfairly pilloried. Among other things, she was sent to prison for telling a lie about an allegedly illegal stock transaction that officially (and, therefore, legally) never happened. God bless Americuh.

  8. I can cook, too. Or at least boil over with my hourly temper tantrums. Need to get back on the road now. Love to you all. Maryam Banikarim.

  9. Both are demanding and the opposite of touchy feely. both are lousy stock investments. while martha was convicted of an actual crime. gracia is guilty of treating rank and filers badly. neither seems to care.

  10. If you had a choice, which one would you work for?

  11. You'll need to ask Jackie Kelly. She walked out on both.

  12. Hilarious question, 10:07 considering that people here have not worked since 2008.

  13. 8:43 AM You need to do more reading.
    A lot more.
    She's a real Waksal, I mean rascal.

  14. Here’s the most noteworthy distinction:

Stewart built her own wealth from scratch, Matore joined Dubow in helping destroy much of the wealth Gannett built up before her arrival.

Gannett’s filled with characters like Matore having created a culture whereby entrepreneurs like Stewart get the hell out. The reverse is long overdue.

  15. Jacki Kelley walked out on both? Not surprised...she always had a great sense about people.

  16. Why didn't she have the sense that her husband manufactured fake stories for years, and embezzled thousands of dollars in phony expenses 'reporting' these fantasies?

  17. Great post, and never quit reminding the world how much in shareholder equity -- that is, money -- these "leaders" have squandered away by eviscerating the local papers and stations of their profit to prop up a corporate yacht staffed by overpaid blowhards and nobodies. The papers and stations would have done fine if they'd been allowed to reinvest those profits into content and ad sales compensation. For some reason, Gannett never figured out that the rollup business model died in the 1990s, and it merrily overpaid for one newspaper group after another at peak prices. That stock price drop is the McCorkindale-Dubow-Martore legacy. An activist investor should make a move on Gannett, take over the board and sell the assets to the highest bidder while they're still worth something.

  18. The assets aren't worth crap, xcept for the real estate.

  19. Two of the most unlikeable, unskilled women running a company. Even worse than Andrea Jung and Carly Fiorina. And that's saying a lot.

  21. I can't speek for other newspapers but the Arizona Republic still makes them a bunch of cash. Of course they will never tell you how much John Z. made the statement awhile back that it was very profitable.

  22. at least as the Founder, its Martha's idea she's running into the ground. Of course, since its public, she's doing as much damage to the shareholders as GM is.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
