  1. 9:27....LH is passive/aggressive. That's here management style.

Under her you can be a complete idiot and survive a long time if your philosophy is.... "Take the beating and get out of the meeting"

  2. Jim,
I keep hearing about this company from everyone in the newsroom, at the AP, industry events and now I see it is written about in both Wired and Atlantic Monthly. I know you posted about Narrative Science previously around the time Saridakis departed from Gannett. I also understand he and his Doubleclick buddies are the investors in Narrative Science. Do you know if Gannett uses them?

  3. Nice rip on print, Jimmy Kimmel. And how much of the marketing slush fund did we have to dispense for the honor of being insulted?

I'm sorry, this couldn't have been a marketing event. Too many elite in the room, and that's just not us.

    1. MB was to be focused on big plans leading up to and celebrating the 30th. i guess she hasnt figured out how not to make it about her. still, isnt marketing supposed to be her specialty?

  5. Let's start a Kate Marymount Watch. We'll note any time she shows up in a Gannett newsroom and count the number of times she shows up anywhere this year. We need to start with past reports and ask Jim to give us a page to track her activity. Like others, I feel like she is virtually invisible, both physically and as a leader. We could count on Phil Curie fighting for us and doing good. Kate, no.

  6. A helpful clarification: It's MARYMONT (no "u") and CURRIE (two "r's").

  7. 12:57 Good question about Narrative Science, the company that has developed software to "write" stories once it has been fed data, such as sports scores or company financial information.

At one time, I believe, Gannett was considering working with the company. I don't know whether that happened.

    Does anyone else know?

  8. LH passive agressive/under performing MW site! 45% revenue decrease....since 2010. Someone must be doing some serious suckin up . Wow ! And still open with same Publisher.
    Unreal!!

  9. Sorry about the misspellings, Jim. Marymount has been so distant and irrelevant that I forgot how to spell her name. And Currie is ancient history, long forgotten. Oh well.

  10. Note to 10:04 -- I agree that Marymont is a non-player at a time when Gannett journalists desperately need a vice president/news who will stand up and fight for the profession.

But you must not have had to deal much with Currie. Yes, he was active and visible, unlike Marymont. But too often he busied himself sticking his nose where it didn't belong and needlessly second-guessing just because he could. However, given a choice between the two, I'd take Phil.

Unless, of course, John Quinn still were available!

  11. Want a good laugh? Go to http://www.tallahassee.com/ right now and check out the lead shot. The frame grab from the local black university's graduation makes everyone there look like a midget!

  13. I've worked with both Currie and Kate, and let me tell you something: there's a reason why PC left the company. He didn't have the chops or the fire in the belly needed to tackle the c haos that has unfolded in our industry. Phil was a traditionalist. He ran away from the digital side of things. He didn't want to get his hands dirty with all that has transpired -- from newshole cuts to staffing cuts to furloughs and new digital initiatives. Wonderful guy and a true mentor for many of us in the company. But he was a print guy exclusively who loved the political game. And canonizing him and wishing that he would still be with us ---- not so much. Kate is a different kind of leader who is highly engaged and a lot more visible than some on this site believe. She's always on the road and is trusted greatly by both Dickey and Gracia. I'm not a troll. But let's knock off the criticism of Kate and focus on the bigger tasks that are ahead of us. And trust me. There are lots and lots of them.

  15. "She's always on the road and is trusted greatly by both Dickey and Gracia." Sorry, that doesn't mean much since Gracia and Dickey have made so many BAD, BAD decisions. Look at who they have working for them and how badly this company is performing. That is what speaks volumes.

  17. I like the messages in secret code. They show how so many people here could not master basic communication skills. Now they blame Gannett for their own failings.

  18. Picked up a copy of Friday's USA Today. Lucked out at one of the SA’s which still had 8-9 copies left this afternoon. I was surprised to see that there were so few ad's in the paper. That explains why the paper was so thin. This edition covered the NFL Draft and the start of NBA playoffs. Did Gannett make any money on the advertising or circulation for this edition? Where did the advertising revenue and the paid circulation numbers fall for this edition Y/Y. Looks like it’s heading in one direction; south.

  19. On the USAT link for the WHC Dinner, one of their guests listed is Uggie, the Jack Russell Terrier from "The Artist". I'd love to know if he had any reaction when Obama mentioned "eating dog".

Maybe someone from one of the rivals will get the scoop!

  21. "It is the single most revolting annual gathering of pseudojournalistic &*&*suckery in all the land," Gawker's Hamilton Nolan wrote. "The White House Correspondents' Association Dinner is a shameful display of whoredom that makes the 'average American' vomit in disgust."

  22. The recent series of GE television ads focus on the people who actually create GE products. The ads celebrate what I call "teamwork in the trenches." In contrast, Gannett comes off as a top-down company in which big shots prosper at the expense of the real workers. There are no discernable goals shared by corporate and its employees.
Corporate's boss -- the GCI Board -- seems oblivious to this debilitating defect.
At GE, employees are told they are respected, needed and integral parts of the company's goals.
At GCI, workers are treated as disposal, inhuman objects. When is the last time the CEO and/corporate leaders celebrated a GCI success inspired at the grassroot level?
Question: When will the GCI Board's inaction make them vulnerable to charges of malfeasance?

  26. Using Google Analytics, I can see which search terms people use to find Gannett Blog.

Here's the strangest one to ever lead someone to my site: "Is Debbie McKee a lesbian?"

(Note: I don't know, and there's nothing on my site to indicate otherwise.)

  27. 9:12 PM -- The Enquirer redesign has been under way for awhile. It is and will continue to be designed at the Design Studio in Louisville, Ky.

  28. The only thing MB knows how to market is herself. Can women actually have a Napoleon complex?

  29. I would not cite GE as a company to emulate. The stock has been dead in the water for the past five years. That might be a better showing than Gannett, but not by much.

GE also pays zilch in corporate taxes. It's branding campaign means about as little as Gannett's. Do they really need to spend millions telling us they make the turbines that run the equipment at your brewery?

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
