  1. Two years ago today on Gannett Blog:

USA Today is now previewing a new look for its home page. The last overhaul was in 2007.

  2. I'm cross-posting this because it is of high interest.

    4:11 and others:

Regarding recent questions about Gannett's disability policy, a Gannett Blog reader who's one of our best resources of accurate information about benefits has provided two useful documents:

    1. An October 2010 letter from Corporate describing changes to the policy

    2. A one-page brochure highlighting Gannett's then-new CIGNA disability insurance benefits, which became effective Jan. 1 of this year.

  3. "a Gannett Blog reader who's one of our best resources of accurate information about benefits"

There is no such thing. People at Gannett Blog do not understand how benefits work.

  4. 12:20 clearly hasn't checked the links. Again.

  5. Jim clearly hasn't checked the previous 1,000 or so posts where people here tried to sound as if they knew how benefits worked but didn't know anything.

Those topics include, but are not limited to: COBRA, 401(k)s, unemployment insurance, hourly/salaried workers, withholding, W-2s, Dubow's disability compensation, and so on.

  6. If you are still a Gannett employee and are in constant fear of being layed off, why?
Isn't 3 years of the Gannett layoff plan enough
    to convince you ?
You come here and whine and complain, instead of just leaving.
You are enduring self imposed pain and expecting sympathy.
When in fact you are enabling Gannett to not only stay in business, but to make billions off your tripled work load.
What else does it take to get for you to get the message that your days are numbered.

  7. This has become the time of the year that I think about all of my former colleagues who were laid off by Gannett, many unnecessarily or for all the wrong reasons. Most of them were let go or pushed out right before Christmas. Despite being very talented, some have been out of work for over two years. It's just very difficult to find a job when you're over 50 and coming from a struggling industry, which makes what Gannett did to these loyal people all the more ruthless.

Everyone should try to reach out to anyone they know who fell victim to Gannett. This time of year must be particularly difficult for these good folks who, sad to say, may never fully recover. I know it's easy to forget the people we worked with, but now is the time to reach out. After all, in one way or another, all of these laid off people helped us out in some small or even profound way at some point in our careers.

  8. OK, 1:25 a.m., the wife has kicked you out of bed for snoring or farting and so you're up and trolling your subscription porn sites and taking your corporate turn causing mischief on Gannett Blog. Start your own blog.

  10. Re: your second paragraph, 8:44... at least from Gannett Corporate, this sadly doesn't hold true: those people are spineless, ruthless, and heartless. It's chilling from the stories I've heard of former employees who were dropped like rocks from their former co-workers.

  11. Count how many of these 10 things that drive away the best talent from companies apply directly to the problems at Gannett. I'd say easily more than half of them at my newspaper.

  12. They should add "managerial incompetence" to that list and make it 11 things.

  13. Horrible, as is Republic's handling of story:

  14. The Phoenix New Times has this story on its website and cites a "reporter and an editor" who verified it was an ASU Cronkite intern.

  15. I'm one of those people the faithful are happy to see gone. Nearly three decades in Gannett, laid off as part of the design hub process. In my 50s, trying to find a new career in a state that treats the unemployed like criminals on parole. Spent final days on job watching people going nuts trying to get a paper out on Newsgate. Well, enjoy, true believers. Just remember: be careful what you ask for. You just might get it.

  16. 8:55 must be one of the many here who don't understand how benefits work.

  20. I don't care what any of you say I am out of GANNETT and so damn proud and happy to be gone!
Of course you'll have the ones to say they are glad I am gone also. But I actually feel sorry for any of you working- especially there.
    Happy Holidays!
    Mine will be outstanding!
GANNETT---HO HO HO! BAH HUM BUG!!!

  21. The day that Gannett stops using a model of obsessive micromanagement and trusts reporters to do their jobs is the day you free the spirits of the writers you employ and increase productivity. The day that corporate starts running this company with a more humanistic 21st Century approach like other companies where people are actually proud to work like Apple, Google, etc. is a step in the right direction. It should also be embarrassing to this company that they do not give cost-of-living raises, which are the minimal, annually. Gannett has a terrible reputation.

  25. Nice to get a bonus, how ever after raking furloughs the last 3 tears and no pay raises, why was The Lafayette paper not included in this program. From what I understand out numbers are great, were making money..but who got the bonus, the OC members, the Publisher who is in charge of nothing anymore sense we went to GPS division and I'm sure his executive assistance. So we just keep working harder with no reward, just paycuts and furloughs. I would like to call out the Publisher of the Journal and Courier and the Operations Manager who know works for GPS, these 2 guys are like machines with no feelings for their employees. We are just numbers and our Op Manager is a ruthless SOB who only cares about himself, if he only new how much he is despised by the entire staff at The Courier. He sucks to work for, no at a boys ever, only bitching if a color ad is out of registration only to a glass lens. I only hope he departs sooner than later, people will be much more into their jobs without this a hole not being in the fold. enough I can go on for ever

  26. It's bad enough that the Enquirer stopped publishing the Erlanger Recorder and combined it into the Community Recorder but this week they tossed the Campbell County Recorder in our driveway? Seriously? We're not even in Campbell County!

  27. 5:22 they must have clones cuz there is one at FT just like that. Must be the GANNETT way!

  28. I tip my hat to you, 8:44. A reminder that if your former colleagues were also friends to you and good to you while you worked together, please reach out to them now. Being laid off takes a terrible toll is so many ways. And kind of encouragement helps.

  29. Strong post, 8:44 a.m. I hear you loud and clear.
You described me, and many other 50-somethings I know who also are ex-Gannett, to a "T". For those life-longers who've done nothing but work hard all their adult lives, only to get kicked off the sinking ship unceremoniously, the holiday season is just another period of time in which we concentrate on re-inventing ourselves. And if we don't want to leave our smaller communities, where most of GCI's papers are located, it's even more difficult to transition into something non-newspaper related.

  30. I agree with 5:20
Lafayette Indiana's newspaper management staff is a joke. All for one and screw the blue collar worker. These clowns are like cyborg computers with no brains, just chips in their head that control all emotions based on newspaper production. Our Operation manager is a blow hard , self control freak who doe's nothing but figure out ways how to screw his worker bees. What a loser, a rich one at that, but you know what, his day is coming and when he gets canned, he will have no life ( not that he has one now)Poor rich a hole, hope he get stuck in the chimney Christmas night as he slivers down the chimney at the company x mas party to make his grand entrance..what a d--k

  31. Wishing all of my former employees at The Baxter Bulletin in Mountain Home, AR and a Merry Christmas and the very best for the New Year!

    There is life after Gannett!
