Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

ReplyDeleteDeleting for no apparent reasons such as
11:39 commenting on the life after Gannett.
What's with that, folks can't comment on how much they love life after Gannett ??
Let's give a shout of support to our sisters and brothers at the Indy Star

ReplyDeleteGood stuff. Comments better LOL
Speaking of management bloat as some posters did earlier, why three editors for five reporters in the Cincinnati Enquirer business desk. That department hasn't been touched, but the Metro staff in the LIC has been decimated with the loss of top tier people.

ReplyDeleteUh, thanks for visiting, 12:44.
ReplyDeleteJim, there's a lot of hand-wringing happening in the South Group (Louisiana and Tennessee) because of the posts about how the early adopters have been screwed over by the new Design Studios (for those of you late to the party, Sunday's comments had a thread about how some NT-31s who created consolidated copy desks before the studios are now learning that the Design Studios won't do any of the things that our copy editors used to do, except design papers; some of these sites have to hire back or retrain survivors to do copy editing duties). Can you perhaps capture some of these comments into a single, new thread?
12:44, without this blog, we would have no place to turn to get attention on this issue, or any of the other matters that corporate turns a deaf ear towards.
Continuing the tradition: Stock goes down = big news here. Stock goes up = no news here.
ReplyDelete10:52...I love the comment where the reader points out the 25-ish percent loss of circulation for the Wausau Daily Herald. The shrinking the paper to the size of a comic strip is entertaining as well.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it mandatory for papers to run the US Today world/national news page?
ReplyDeleteJust wondering because the Fond du Lac paper for the second time in a couple of months has not had it in it's Sunday edition.
LIFE IS WONDERFUL after my leaving.
ReplyDeleteThank you.!!!!!!!!!!!
Readers are now providing much of the content at HNT in Jersey. If you write a story, it will be published. They have daily stories now, even on A1, written by breast cancer survivors about their ordeal, and it's not even breast cancer awareness month yet. Imagine what October will bring. Remember when journalists used to interview people and write stories about them? I guess those days are over.
ReplyDeleteThe USA Today pages aren't mandatory, just highly encouraged. The space for the page comes out of the newshole budget, and as one of the smaller papers Fond du Lac doesn't always have the space. With a typical paper being two six page sections, they're lucky to get any news in at all.
ReplyDeleteI retired from Gannett (DMP) after 40+ years. No problem with any pension monies. I was in the union. Everything else went ok.
ReplyDeleteHey 4:58, get us an alert when it gets back to a QUARTER of what it was when the current leadership took over.
ReplyDeleteA lot of long posts in this thread. Who has the time to write all this stuff and who wants to read it - no one. Folks, can we please write in the USA TODAY style - short and to the point?
ReplyDeleteGarcia Martore made the list of The Wahingtonian's 100 Most Powerful Women.
ReplyDeleteShe's one of eight in the media category, and it says, " a former banker, Martore is testing new revenue streams for USA TODAY and other Gannett papers as advertising dollars shrink."
This shows that for all the vitriole here at the Blog, there's a whole other way the world views such things.
Just saying...
CNN reports USA Today's twitter account was hacked and false tweets were sent out. I guess no blog readers noticed.
ReplyDeleteOops.
ReplyDeleteGracia ....Washingtonian.
Sorry for misspellings. Damn tablets (Gracia was actually "corrected" to Garcia!
8:19am, I would never notice because I don't follow USA Today.
ReplyDeleteBig announcement coming Thursday!
ReplyDeleteDo tell, My Boss!
ReplyDelete8:54 said: "Memo to Kate: WAKE UP! Help. Start asking tough questions. Are the "early adopters" being screwed? YES!"
ReplyDeleteAs one who knew Marymont back when she was still a newspaperwoman, it has saddened me to see her morph into a corporate hack. She isn't asleep, but rather is wide awake to any opportunities to prolong her access to the big bucks. Sad, sad, sad!
So Gracia gets noted for "testing" new revenue streams. If only she could find them.
ReplyDeleteThe reports about the design studios are entertaining. But anyone who thought there would be any other result had their head buried deeply in the sand.
ReplyDeleteNo sane organization would cut people with necessary skills and then try to build around people who aren't able to do the job they have been presented.

ReplyDeleteMy Boss, are you referring to news about the deal with US Presswire (Photog layoffs?) Gannett's been pretty silent on that so far.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who knows about the changes coming on Thursday and having worked closely with what I consider to be the most egregious change, I am appalled by my colleagues and their actions on this one. Someone is getting the shaft and I am not going to sit idly by and watch it happen. I will be in touch.
ReplyDeletehuh?

ReplyDeleteTo 10:19:
ReplyDeleteI've known Marymont for a decade and she hasn't displayed any news sensibilities in that time so when you say when "she was still a newspaperwoman" you must be going back decades. She's a self-promoter in love with her concept of herself.
4:58 Regarding my posts about stock prices:
ReplyDeleteI note changes in the price when they are unusual. For example, GCI has recently been reaching new 52-week lows. That's news.
It's less newsworthy, however, when the stock merely creeps up. There are exceptions, of course, as was the case late last month, when I wrote about GCi's soaring by an unusually high 8%.
At FT our daily paper is looking more and more like the Oralndo Sentinnel, who said that ever was a good format? And what about the extra sections with the kudos for the publisher and elite wanna bees, how pat on the back is that. I wouldn,t call that style - but snobbish- waste of print!!!!!!!!
