Mark Baldwin, most recently general manager and executive editor of Wisconsin dailies at Wausau and Stevens Point, has been named the top news executive at The Republic of Columbus, Ind., the paper said today.
Republic Publisher Chuck Wells says Baldwin will succeed Bob Gustin when he retires as editor May 5.
Baldwin was an executive with Gannett papers in Wisconsin for the last 12 years, according to the Republic. He left Wausau and Stevens Point on Nov. 15. On his Twitter account at the time, Baldwin wrote, "Gang: I returned to work Monday after burying my nephew, only to learn my job had been eliminated. Need a communications pro? Let me know."
He previously was managing editor at the Star Gazette in Elmira, N.Y., and was an editor at the Chicago Sun-Times, the Wichita Eagle in Kansas, the Milwaukee Sentinel and the Clearwater Sun in Florida.
The Republic says it's one of the oldest family-owned newspapers in the country. ABC does not list circulation data for the paper on the agency's look-up site.

Mark is a real pro. Great news that he's found life after Gannett.
ReplyDeleteGoes to show you how thoughtless and bloodless the people who run Gannett are. Sorry to read of Mr. Baldwin's loss and wishing him the very best in his new job.
ReplyDeleteThat paper needs someone to push the staff to do real journalism, not the chicken dinner news I so often see when I return to Columbus.
ReplyDeleteWow! Good for you, Mark! Enjoy life outside of Gannett and probably a better place than Gannett. Hey, anything can be better than this kind of treatment.
ReplyDeleteAs Jim states:
And I ignore abusive posters, and recommend you do, too.
Good for Mark, a quality guy going to a quality daily newspaper. The Columbus Republic is a very good newspaper in a very nice town.
