Urgent: Zidich is named publisher of the year

Zidich
That's according to a just-distributed list of the 10 publishers given President's Rings for 2010, the top prize in the U.S. community newspaper division. In all, 25 publishers were eligible at 81 dailies. (I don't think USA Today is included in these awards.)

John Zidich of The Arizona Republic, who also is president of the West Group of regional dailies, was one of the three leading publishers, according to division President Bob Dickey, who announced the awards earlier today. This is Zidich's eighth ring. The other two:
  • Susie Ellwood of the Detroit Media Partnership, first runner-up; this is her ninth ring
  • Roy Heatherly of The Jackson Sun in Tennessee, second runner-up; this is his second ring
The other seven winners, with the total rings they have now won in parentheses:
  • Sherm Bodner of the Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin in New York (5)
  • Mike Beck of the Wausau Daily Herald in Wisconsin (5)
  • Genia Lovett of the Post-Crescent in Appleton, Wis. (4)
  • Brian Priester of the Lansing State Journal in Michigan (8)
  • Rindraty Limtiaco of the Pacific Daily News in Guam (4)
  • Margaret Buchanan of The Cincinnati Enquirer (12)
  • Mei-Mei Chan of The News Press in Fort Myers, Fla. (1)
In a memo forwarded to me by a reader, Dickey said: "Each of these winners remained focused on providing quality journalism and compelling content while ensuring all of our customers were served at the highest possible levels. Their leadership was evident beyond just the results they delivered; they care about their employees and the communities they serve."

Related: here's last year's list of winners for 2009.

Earlier: 38 other newspaper managers get rings for 2010. Plus: In last year's award for Ellwood, a sign of things to come.

  1. As the former publisher there, Dickey continues to pull along the rest of the Phoenix Mafia.

In addition to Zidich's getting publisher of the year (after being named president of the West Group late last year), Republic Editor Randy Lovely was one of the three top winners of President's Rings on the list of other management honorees today.

(The Sue Clark-Johnson magic still at play?)

  2. Right on Jim.....as usual Gannett is a complete joke. If I ran Gannett I would fire Zidich not promote and reward him....and so would a bunch of other companies... Gannett truly lives in another world.

  3. Handicapping USA Today's next publisher, will it be Zidich, Ellwood or Buchanan?

  4. Jim, USA Today is a step down from Phoenix and the West Group so it will not be Zidich. Zidich is a class act and is well deserving of the award. 3:34 obviously does not know him or his work.

  5. Just noticed Brooke Christofferson was on the list of recipients of a President's Ring......

"Brooke Christofferson, vice president/Market and Business Development, Phoenix (first-time winner)"

All I can say is having worked with her personally and been in countless meetings with her; she is one of most brainless and pompus people I have ever met...for sure she fits the Gannett mold but I am shocked (I guess I shouldn't be) how people with very little intelligence or common sense are consistently promoted. She was one of Karen Crotchfelt's close friends another genius at large. I'm not saying this to be mean or just because I hate Gannett but these individuals really aren't that smart and only can exceed in an organization like Gannett. When I used to work at the Arizona Republic we always had the running joke that the lunatics are running the insane asylum and I was in management, man how those words keep ringing true. LOL

  6. Zidich delivers for Gannett. Plain and simple. If you don't have the facts, don't criticize. He deserves it.

Ah yes, I use to work at the Arizona Republic and knew him pretty damn well as a manager. Zidich is (and I am not trying to be mean) but he is not all with it when it comes to managing anything, his problem solving skills are at best those of recent college graduate finding their way and yes and know as USA Today is a step down... having been from the East Coast nobody even knows that the Arizona Republic is in existence (while USA Today for better or worse is well known) and the president of USA Today is much higher up in the totem pole of Gannett management. You need to first double check your facts of how the organization is setup and then to back away from your personal relationship with Zidich and think objectively. If Zidich worked for a reputable company he would have been fired for his involvement with the Fiesta Bowl scandal... the craziness goes on and on with Gannett?? It's so strange that a company actually operates in this way that all logic is defied.... LMAO

Zidich doesn't deliver anything... and you left yourself open for this...... He isn't even qualified to deliver a newspaper, let alone run one. It's really surprising how many Zidich suck ups there are wow.

  9. A's hire other A's.
    B's hire C's.

Question is, who then hires Gannett publishers and editors?

    Jim,
Everyone knows, but no one is willing to talk about "the BIG Phoenix cover-up". This ring helps Zidich keep it all quiet.

Bob Dickey knows what is happening. THis is a sad day for the company. Someone needs to investigate. I will be happy to blow this whistle!

Just spill the beans... it sounds like nothing otherwise you would have said something already. I would love to see Zidich go down.

  13. Rings traded in London, rings handed out at the Crystal Towers. An archaic ritual and a discordant declaration. Both out of touch with reality.
Prince William demanded costs be kept down for his wedding and his wife-to-be be forgiven for not being a virgin. He changed some things to adapt to today's world. Nice going, William.
GCI chiefs, on the other hand, clung to their ring ritual like a dim-witted coach handing out MVPs to members of a zero-and-50 basketball team. The biggest star of all? A guy whose recent poor judgment and lapse in ethics embarrassed serious journalists throughout the country. It's like saying it's okay to cheat as long as you win the game.
With Gannett, everything seems within reach except good judgment, integrity and the ability to tell right from wrong.
GCI should have given the ring thing a vacation this year, promising to bring it back when there is something worth celebrating.

  14. I can't believe one of the publisher names I expected is missing in the list of 38. He had one of the only major installations to oversee these past few years and did mission work for Gannett moving to several properties as needed, helping make the best of consolidations that should have cut into profits and goals. BUT.. He kept the team together, kept things running to little celebration. You may not think of him because he doesn't toot his horn. Think southern state with several G properties. Really? he didn't get listed. A pure snub in my book. I'll look again, but I don't see him rewarded for his management of a major million dollar investment in a market. Not to mention, he is one of the TRUE good guys and one of the best to work for. Hint: He cooked hamburgers in the parking lot to celebrate his team recently.

  15. The comments about Brooke Christofferson are simply unfair. Brooke is an extremely smart, creative and compassionate person. She truly cares about her employees. She has given a huge amount of her time and energy to the company and has made a positive difference! Simply put - Brooke is a good person and we need more like her!

  16. I totally agree with 8:06. Having worked at Gannett for nearly 30 years (I was laid off in 2009) and having watched publishers come and go, said publisher is top-notch - accessible, caring and doing his best to hold the place together. Overseeing the press installation with input from every direction may have frazzled him but we never saw it. He's more than deserving of recognition from higher ups. At least I think he knows those who work at his site think the best of him.

Obviously you are one of her lackeys and are blinded by her aura of incompetence. Like I said, I have been in countless meetings with her and never once saw a spark or originality, intelligence or commonsense...on the other hand, she is an excellent parrot able to repeat and reproduce anything that Gannett asks for........

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
