Des Moines | Register among first to brand itself

The Des Moines Register was among at least two newspapers this morning to brand themselves prominently as "A Gannett Company," following the new guidelines announced Friday. The other was the Montgomery Advertiser.

The change is part of Corporate's new brand campaign, which officially launches tomorrow. GCI businesses are to label themselves prominently as Gannett-owned. Newspapers, for example, are to include the "Gannett Company'' phrase near their flag.

Here's the top of today's Register, with the new text (circled) on the far right . . .

. . . compare that to Friday's edition; click on either image for a bigger view:

I don't have last Sunday's edition, so can't see how designers accommodated the new text. However, Friday's paper included a line saying, "On the web and your mobile at desmoinesregister.com." In today's, it says only: "desmoinesregister.com."

  2. We never bragged about being owned by Gannett. The way our paper looks currently, the general public can now hate Gannett as much as we do!

  3. As much as it pains me to say it, the new branding actually makes it better by creating an excuse for shortening "On the web and your mobile at desmoinesregister.com." I think most literate people nowadays know what to do with a URL.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
