Dirty Biz | In outsourced cleaning, cost cutting

I'm told The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., is the latest worksite to shave costs from its budget by eliminating janitorial jobs -- in this case, three, all by the end of the month. An outside company is picking up the work, according to my tipster.

There was a similar move at two East Coast newspapers in late August, a reader said at the time: "I was just told this morning that the last full-time janitors . . . are being laid off. There will be one floating F-T maintenance man between the two facilities."

  1. Louisville folks better get ready for working in dirty offices! The independents have a routine at the Rockland office of The Journal News: They empty the trash cans every night and vacuum the floors every few weeks. They hardly ever make it into the lunchroom.
As for dusting? Forget about it! You have to bring in your own End Dust, rags, etc.

  2. Are you kidding. In Nashville when we lost our janitorial staff the place went to hell. The bathrooms stink and I don't think they ever clean the urinals. My guess is they are waiting for everything to fall apart and then they will try to sell the now nearly empty building.

  3. We've had outsourced cleaning services for the 7 years I've been at my location. It was 5 nights a week, but now it's just MWF. A lot of our activities are on Thursdays so if you don't take your trash to the dumpster, it sits there. I seldom let them in my office anyway. I usually set the trash can outside the door when I leave which is the signal for them to stay out. When I do let them in, they mostly just dust the blinds. I don't want them messing with my desk! We periodically complain to the building manager about their lack of cleaning of the bathrooms.

  4. A lot of janatorial work was already being outsourced in Louisville; this just adds to the process. The offices already weren't clean.
