Gannett names new pub, GM and executive editor

In a domino-like series of newspaper appointments, Gannett has reached outside the company for a new publisher in Montgomery, Ala.; named a new general manager in Muncie, Ind., and appointed a new executive editor in Cherry Hill, N.J., according to a statement just issued by Corporate.

Montgomery: Sam Martin (left), senior vice president and chief advertising officer for The Boston Globe, was named chief executive of the Montgomery Advertiser.

Martin previously worked for Gannett as senior vice president of marketing at The Cincinnati Enquirer, from 1999-2002, and advertising director at The News Journal in Wilmington, Del., from 1993-1999. He replaces Cheryl Lindus, who had been publisher since 2008.

Martin is moving to a newspaper with a considerably smaller readership. The Globe's circulation is about 230,000 daily, and 379,000 on Sunday, according to the latest ABC figures, as of March 31. Montgomery's is 35,827 daily, and 44,120 on Sunday.

Muncie: Lindus (left) becomes general manager at The Star-Press, a position that in name suggests a step down. The Muncie paper's circulation is 23,721 daily, and 28,932 Sunday.

Before Montgomery, Lindus was advertising director at Gannett's Springfield News-Leader in Missouri, and at The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, West Virginia. (Gannett sold the Herald-Dispatch to GateHouse Media in 2007.) Earlier, Lindus held other advertising jobs at the Star Press. She replaces Gene Williams, the Star Press's GM and executive editor.

Cherry Hill: Williams was named executive editor of the Courier-Post, replacing Everett Mitchell, whose late-March departure has never been publicly explained. In Muncie, Williams had been GM since the middle of last year, and executive editor since joining that paper in 2007.

The Courier-Post's circulation: 51,889, Monday-Friday; 59,311 on Saturday, and 67,485 on Sunday, ABC says.

  1. Awesome baby! Sam Martin is the BEST! Congrats Montgomery, you’ve got a great new Publisher. Congrats to whoever decided to bring him back. We missed you Sam!

  2. I'm a Montgomery employee and I love Cheryl Lindus. She makes things happen. She understands the current-day newspaper's situation. Muncie is getting a really good person and leader.

As an aside, Cheryl is a Ball State girl. That may explain why she's headed back toward Muncie.

  4. Good luck, Sam. With a declining readership base and one of the worst connected cities of its size in the country, Montgomery will surely present you with massive challenges.
Work with the community to rebuild Montgomery, the same way people are working to rebuild Detroit. While you do that, work to regain your base in the suburbs...people still read you there.

  6. I feel sorry for Cherry Hill. I'm sure Muncie is cheering. Don't expect to be led anywhere but but down. Big ego coming your way and that's about all I can say.

  7. Get real Arazi. Cheryl Lindus may have understood the current newspaper national crisis but she had no people skills, no relationships with employees or customers. She was demoted to GM in Muncie because she performed poorly as a Publisher and made many poor decisions. She was not qualified to bring forth positive changes to improve newspaper credibility, improve circulation or gain staff loyalty. I hope she has learned from her mistakes. Watch out Muncie...the broom is flying your way.

  8. These threads always bring out the worst in Jim and the drones who long to lick his boots. Lots of unfounded personal B.S. that has no place at a site that claims to be about journalism.

  10. To anonymous 12:43 am....The truth was posted at 10:34 pm and the Corporate visit to Montgomery uncovered the truth and facts. The transfer was necessary and well earned. Her arrogance, egotism and inferiority complex is a dangerous mix that destroyed performance and morale during her reign. Truth always prevails in the end.

  11. I've lived in Southern New Jersey my whole life. I'm annoyed that Gannett is bringing in another out of state executive editor to the Courier-Post so he can say "I know what South Jersey readers want." When will Gannett put someone from South Jersey in charge of "South Jersey's Newspaper?"

  12. Beggar Hopkins. I like that.

  13. 8:10: Gannett is like the Army. It has posts all over the map and assigns people as vacancies arise, regardless of personal fit or geographic familiarity. Transfers are less about finding long-term solutions at individual properties or markets, more about using the sites to groom management talent and loyalty sufficiently enough that they will someday earn a place in the select, entitled elite at Gannett HQ.

  14. RE: Cherry Hill and the new EE. It's nothing new to bring in suits from outside who know nothing about the unique Southern NJ area which is just a stone throw from Philadelphia! The Exec Editor (Mitchell) who they got rid of before this new person was announced, was a good example who was put there either to get him out of the way elsewhere or to meet some more of Gannett's politically correct equal opportunity agenda. No matter, anyway. This paper is just waiting for the Philadelphia Inquirer to wake up and provide proper coverage of this important market. If, and I mean if that happens, the end will be near sooner than anyone thinks. However, is anyone at the Inquirer smart enough to figure this out? Just look at how many former Gannett losers went there!

  15. EE going to New Jersey is a big loss for Muncie and a big gain for NJ. He is very fair and considerate and looks after his staff. He is an independent thinker and not your Gannett drone.

  16. Big mama going to Muncie is a blessing for us at Montgomery. Good luck Muncie. Don't let her suck you up and spit you out.

  19. It’s so funny to read the racist affirmative action comments about EJ Mitchell. Gannett has what four or five Black Editors and maybe one Black publisher and fools like 3:32 take their shots. Grow up people. We are living in the 21st Century. Women and people of color are everywhere. I am sorry we can’t go back to 1960. Am for the record I am an old white male. I have no horse in this race but I know a bigot when I see one.
