Bad timing | Pub Garson: Industry 'alive and well'

The Courier-Journal's disastrous press failure this morning coincidentally came the same day Publisher Arnie Garson (left) told readers in an op-ed column that the industry remains strong, despite worrywart reports to the contrary.

"The newspaper industry is alive and well,'' he writes. "Yes, we are changing, and the economic pressures are greater than they used to be. But The Courier-Journal has remained a profitable business throughout this recession. It is a fully viable business now and for the future. In fact, we are much stronger economically today than we were a year ago. Ditto for our parent company, Gannett."

His conclusion:

"It will publish my obituary and yours -- but definitely not its own."

Garson's column is headlined "Rethink: Newspapers are better off than you may think." It got big play on the paper's Forum section front:

  1. Ah -- you just spotted that. Good.

  2. Garson shows contempt for his paying customers by not arranging to deliver the papers this afternoon. Perhaps reciprocity is in order.

  3. I remember what a great paper this was back in the days when the Binghams owned it. How far they've fallen since.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
